FIRST SIGN OF MAJOR CHANGES AT APPLE. NOW EVEN WOZ HAS TO CAMP OUT OUTSIDE AN APPLE STORE TO GET NEW RELEASES.

And too bad I don't drink and drive because I know exactly which Apple store Woz is at. I could get there in about 10 minutes, and with enough alcohol in my system I would totally take a picture of me wearing my :x shirt with Woz.

Sorry LSZ (and iPad thread fans) for failing this one.

So far my favorite feature is being able to text from my iPad, but of course the person I'm texting with has to also be on an idevice running iOS 5. That's a personal quality control bonus. I have no business texting with people on inferior devices.

And having all my contacts cloud synced on all my idevices and computers makes it that much more awesome.

I just snorted beer out my nose, thanks man.

Anyway, overall the whole iCloud/iOS5 thing for me has been sort of meh. In principle I love the idea, and now that I've finally got it sussed out, it works really well. But initially, it was not so smooth sailing.

Enabling Photo Stream deleted my iPhoto albums on the iPad and iPhone, had to reselect, reconvert, then resync all those on the iPhone and iPad. All of my calendar entries were doubled, because they were synced through iTunes and iCloud. For some reason iCal is the only app in iTunes that doesn't warn you that you're already syncing with iCould (cough, iCloud, cough).

The new notification center is great except that most of the entrees you'd expect to see there aren't turned on by default, they still reverted to the old style icon badges. Also, Apple made a big deal about how you can get to the camera app right from the lock screen, but neglected to tell you how (thanks google!).

Clearing all internet and call history takes more steps now too, which I don't understand.

Anyway, just to prove I'm not a total cult member....

PRO TIP FOR IPAD TEXTING:

iPhones text using the phone number as the reference

iPads text using the Apple ID email address as the reference

For your contact you need both their iphone number and their Apple ID email address to be saved in your address book in order for Messages to recognize them as the same person. Otherwise you'll have 2 separate conversations going on linked to the separate device. Dig?

Once you set this up you'll get the text on both your iPad and your iPhone at the same time, not sure about the syncing and cleanup on that one.

If you run into this situation texting on the iPad where the person's name is displayed at the top as an email address just tap on the silhouette dude in the top right corner to add that email address to an existing contact. And then cloud sync that bitch.

Jebus I am so fucking lost at this point with all the updates and new Texting and iCloud and Newstand and....FUCK.

This is what happens when work doesn't let up and I don't have time to learn about shit.

One Question: Are you FORCED at this point to use iCloud.

Because, honest to FUCK, every post I read where iCloud is mentioned it seems like a fucking NIGHTMARE.

ie. Tarekith's last.....

No you aren't forced to use iCloud. You have to set it up on every idevice and every computer and set on each what type of files you want it to sync and backup.

What I'm really :x about right now is out of the free 5GB backup storage you get with iCloud I already only have 89MB left and I have no clue why. I didn't backup any media files. :x

As far as learning what is new use the iBooks app and do a search in the store for "iOS 5" and Apple has released 2 free books, 1 for the iPad and 1 for the iPhone that covers a lot of the features.

WARNING ON PHOTO STREAM: There's currently no way to delete photos from the iCloud database other than the fact that they automatically delete after 30 days. So if you have it set to autosync and are taking a bunch of stupid or questionable pictures they will sit in the cloud for 30 days.

I think Apple released too much all at once and there's a lot of ironing out to do.

Another note on idevice texting.

If the word bubbles are blue then you are talking to somebody who is also on an idevice running iOS 5. These people are also winners in life you should get intimately involved with.

If the word bubbles are green then you are talking to somebody who either isn’t using an idevice or is using an idevice that isn’t running iOS 5 yet. In either case these people are to be avoided whenever possible. You’ll have a higher caliber of associates with the blue bubble people.

In fact I hope a new social network develops for blue bubble people only. :x

i dunno T. i'm not convinced...

maybe you should explain how other OSes do it better and complain a little about how much you paid for those minor inconveniences; otherwise, when LSZ says "oh ye of little faith" you'll be feeling oddly out of place with just that little toe of yours on the other side of the fence. if you're gonna straddle we need one foot in and one foot out. :x

Automatic wireless sync of idevices to iTunes is kind of weird. I'm not plugging them into my computer but whenever I plug them into the cable that is plugged into the wall for charging it starts syncing with my computer.

So yeah, you don't have to be plugged into the computer, but you do have to be plugged into something. :x

Oddest iOS 5 feature: You can now tap out custom vibrate patterns for when you're ringer is off. 8O :x
