Se5 will have Mike returning to either (a.) assume the post of being the muscle for Walt & Jesse, or (b.) come out swinging and seriously fuck up some shit. I also see Hank growing more suspicious of Walt. The carwash will play some type of pivotal role as well....perhaps as a perfect cover to do a little bit of "cooking".

Mike's gotta be cool with Jesse--Jesse saved his life. And Mike's loyal. Jesse now has the capacity to make the high purity meth, and loyal muscle. Could Walt and Jesse become competitors?

I'm two episodes into season 3 now, avoiding spoilers in this thread, and The thing that's starting to bug me is that by the end of season 2 Walt starts to do things that I would tnk were out of his character.

The big one was when he watched while Jesse's junkie gold digging chick coked on her own vomit. It just doesn't seem like the kind of thing he would let happen, although its pretty clear that he realizes he needs to so he can get her out of the way and help Jesse. Killing a dug lord in a basement is one thing. Watching a young girl die a preventable death while you do nothing is something else.

Also, everything the guy has tried to do with his family (up to ses3) has backfired and yet he still won't come clean. That's majorly sociopathic and hints that something else beyond the illness is going on.

So I'm wondering if the show eventually brings something in about Walt or his past that would explain something deeper about him than just the illness that is causing him to act like this?

In the first two seasons you see Walt's character change--he's breaking bad and the illness isn't causing it (although it precipitated it (LOL)). It continues. To answer your question: No.

I don’t remember if it was season 2 or 3, but for me it got to the point where I almost stop watching the show. It was still great writing and acting, but I was finding it extremely depressing. It was just harsh and not balanced with enough action. Glad I soldiered through. Well worth it up to this point.

I don’t remember if it was season 2 or 3, but for me it got to the point where I almost stop watching the show. It was still great writing and acting, but I was finding it extremely depressing. Same for me. My wife got me reinterested. Now it's not so bad, but for awhile it was like "How can we torture Skyler today?"

yeah I think the point is you're discovering that IS his real character ultimately.

The bit with the girl I just saw as pure self preservation - he really wanted to help her, but if he did he would have had to explain why he was there, get her to hospital and probably talk to the police etc.... and he had brought them a huge bag of cash

I agree with Beats that there was a point where I started to find it a bit painful, but then it just got better and better. I think Se4 was the best of all of them.

I think it's just because he had been living the life of a high-school teacher for so long and he had the chance to be much more than that. Hank ripped on him for having a boring life. He ended up making the best meth and became so valuable as a chemist the he fell in love with the power. It was an alternative calling. He was dying and providing a future for his family. He found his balls. The more exciting the life got and the more he gained power, the more addictive it became. He became a junkie in his own right.

Makes sense, because thinking back to the very first episode ("Fuck you and your eyebrows!" ) it was always about some pent up frustration.

And the bit with the girl dying, man you wanted her to get fucked somehow after she tried to blackmail Walt, but then when it comes you're like "Oh fuck, not like that though!" That was some STELLAR fucking writing there.

I think everyone here has fabulously missed the mark on the underlying theme and the undertone running through this series. If you look deep....really deep....and pay attention....your senses and intuition will tell you that what's really at play here is Walt's affinity for the cornhole. The cancer is a red herring...a diversion at best. He's frustrated with his failure to be the master backdoor-man he's always wanted to be and of course we have Skyler to blame for that. Closely related to all of this is an inference that there's alot of penned up gas that isn't getting to be let out due to social stigma, and I'd expect that to erupt in a big way during sE5...watch Hank in particular.
