Record automation without wiping out other automation

Hi all. Sorry if this is has been answered, i did hunt around for a bit.

I've got the midi notes for a track laid down and now want to do some automation. Let's say I record automation on parameters A and B, by twiddling the knobs on my synth while the track plays through, with record on. So far so good. Now (because i only have two hands) i need to record automation for params C & D seperately. I hit record again and twiddle knobs C & D, but because A & B aren't moving, it re-records over them with a flat line. Can i say to ableton "keep automation on A & B and let me record new automation on C & D"?

I read somewhere that the "Lock Envelopes" right-click option is the way to do this, but it didn't make any difference for me. I've found a workaround, which is to duplicate the track and copy the automation for A & B down from the original to the duplicate, then copy it back up again afterwards, but this is a pain in the arse and, more importantly, it doesn't let me HEAR the automation on A & B while i'm recording automation on C & D.

Any suggestions? thanks, max

EDIT - i figured it out! Basically, when you come to record B & C, make sure the 'record' icon in the track in question is turned OFF, and just have the main record switched on. I'l leave this question up here in case anyone else is wondering and stumbles across it. Thanks for reading!
