Help with drums

Post by cbeng » Fri Oct 21, 2011 11:48 pm

Hi, im am very new to Ableton Live 8 and have just been playin around with the trial. I think that the kick there is very poor, and i have watched tutorials, they nearly almost want me to download kick/hats/claps. Do the big music producers download drums like this?

No, big music producers make everything, down to individual drum samples, from scratch...

Just kidding, nobody does that (well, some maybe)

Using sampled drum sounds is common practice, this is how many (yes, including "big music producers") do their drums. If you're just starting out, don't worry about synthesizing drums, though you should definitely study synthesis, but if you're just looking to lay down a beat, just use some samples, make sure they are not crappy mp3's or something though. What sort of music are you trying to make? If you're making any sort of electronic dance music and or hip-hop, you should try to hunt down some good 808 or 909 samples (808's are bassier, 909's more punchy).
Another thing to consider is drum layering, the following tutorial explains how to use multiple kick samples to make a more personalized kick sound that will hit harder than just using a single sample (make sure you download that kick layering rack thing included free on the linked site's page) Also, you should look up how to use abletons "Compressor" effect, as this will help with kicks.

plenty of ways to roll your own- i record samples from old records and isolate the drum hits for more natural sounding drums, or i record sounds from a drum synthesizer. another way to get a shit-ton of decent drum sounds is to download or buy a drum machine sample library with individual hits from vintage drum machines (definitely 808 & 909 are the favs for most).

once you get those going, you can start layering them- i usually use 2 or 3 kicks and 3 or 4 snares/claps. by adjusting velocities of each layer, you can create dynamic loops with more personality than hearing the same sound repeated again and again. for example, on the 2 beat of a measure, have the snare velocity high and the clap velocity low, then on the 4 beat, have the clap velocity high and the snare low. that way, you have two individual hits that can sound very much the same or different, but always have the same fundamental sounds in common so they jell better.

after that, if you want to get crazy, you can build huge sampler banks where you can easily shift between different kick sounds, snare sounds, hi-hat sounds, etc. that might be another subject though- there's a bunch of ways to do it but they are a little more advanced.

enjoy!

Apart from real drums (I use BFD2), I synthesize all of my own drums - from scratch!
