Can I use Reaper as a slave to Ableton???

Post by DirectGumby » Wed Oct 26, 2011 4:46 am

Hey All,

In short: I need to be able to bring in audio from Reaper where Reaper is running two VST multi-input VSTs for me. The output from the VST can be mono to full multi-track (up to 8) streams. These streams I can break out in Reaper and then I want to send them to Ableton Live and do my core work there.

So far, everything I have found shows using Reaper as the Master and Ableton as the slave.

Is it possible to run Reaper as a slave where it is doing some decoding in a VST, and have the decoded audio sent into Ableton?

Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brett

I presume you're talking about ReWire.

REAPER can be used as a ReWire slave The Wikipedia article calls it a "device" but I think this is the same thing.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. I know Live has some restrictions in slave mode, such as not hosting VST plugins. I don't know if REAPER has anything like that, but you can certainly find out by trying.

I presume you're doing this to get around using multi-output VSTs in Live. Does anyone know if there's a way around that problem? Live's "track and chain" interface does seem to make this a bit difficult. I know you can make other tracks whose inputs are points in another track's chain, but I don't know how detailed this can get.
