new Nine Inch Nails single in LIVE format....
just took a dip into the .als
its really cool how he put the drums in Impulse, rather than as a track like all the others. this gives alot more flexibility and shows people who might just be downloading the Live 4 demo to mess with this .als only what Live can do.
probably not gonna get that out of Garageband...

Check out how small his waveforms are... In the past I've had knowledgeable people advise me both ways: "You should record your waveforms as large as you can without clipping" and "Small, small, small!" [note: I have to credit Fab from Dangerous Audio for being one of the few troubadors of small waveform usage] This track finally proves it to me! Thanks Trent.
I have always liked NIN, but have never been an active fan. This is the first time I've heard this song. Is this exactly what the song sounds like on the album?
I like this song. The first half is better- it seems like he kicked in the traditional NIN formula a tad too much at the end... Great lyrics!
What's most eye opening to me is how the sounds sound when you solo them- most of the sounds on their own sound like stuff I could make- stuff I have at my disposal- I didn't solo anything and think "Damn, if I only had a ____ I could do that" In this day and age it really comes down to writing. And Trent sure can fucking write!

those are not the raw files. they would have been processed to buggery beforehand.Sales Dude McBoob wrote:Check out how small his waveforms are... Mr Reznor or a paid monkey would have gotten the multitrack masters and created loops for you.
Can't wait to see these guys in Australia. Should be better than the last, new material is great.
yah, 'with teeth' is actually very inspiring to we who are not making choonz for a living at present but would like to. i went through every single sound in there-except the bass guitar part-and said 'damn! ive made this sound 400 times this year!' that bass git is phat as all hell..no idea how hes getting such thick tone. my bass kicks ass looks-wise but needs new pickups. epiphone thunderbird. the gibson version would be perfection.
im sad you didnt like 'the fragile' dude...that was the first NIN album i could really sink my teeth into.

For some reason, when I open the als in 4.1.4, the included lesson is missing its close button, and so it remains open no matter what I do. Opened it in 5.0b3 and the close button is there just as it should be. Very odd.
This song sounds like every other NIN song I've heard...oh well I'll have fun remixing it.

You're right, his bass sound is larger than what I have acomplished.. That's one of those things I learned from recording rock bands, the drums are hard to do, but bass is suprisingly even harder to capture.that bass git is phat as all hell.
I have to say, when soloing Trent's bass track, in my headphones it sounded like some of the distortion was a digital crackle, or at least what I precieve as a digital clip, and it's the very sound I work hard on trying to eliminate. You don't hear it in the mix, but when you solo it out it sounds like there is good distortion, but then bad distortion too... digital clip distortion
yah, i know for those guitar parts that sound like really hot digital distortion hes using a zoom board..i cant remember what model it was...it was like 900 bucks in 2000 tho..
my guess on the bass is that he MAY have layered, but im willing to bet that at least one layer is a p-bass to an old ampeg with a tubescreamer in the middle.
