McMillen QuNeo looks to be everything I want in a controller

Post by Ryanmf » Fri Nov 18, 2011 1:46 am

Cheap, (maybe?) open source, thoughtful, use-neutral design with pressure and location sensitive everything. An awesome compromise between the visual feedback of touchscrerens and the tactile feedback of traditional controllers, an awesome evolution of the Softstep...for your hands.

$200 if you pledge it, so they can be put into production:

WOW. this thing is so sexy. i was dreaming of having a kind of "blank template" controller like the touch DAW stuff for ipad combined with haptic feedback. first the 12 step and now this. they must be reading my mind.

Yes it is USB powered. 75% of the goal already, after just 24 hours on Kickstarter!

Crossposting from CDM...

Please oh please let there be something that makes Live's quick MIDI mapping not a giant pain to use with this. It's cool if there's only one signal per sensor, but I'm willing to bet this thing will be transmitting notes on touch and multiple CC's with pressure which is awesome, but quick mapping that will be an adventure, as my SCS.3d has taught me.

If they can solve this issue then I'm sold.

I just became backer #61 which tipped the project from $14,820 to $15,020; goal met.

Pulled the trigger minutes after hearing a painting of mine is going to be in the next BLAB! book on Krampus. ;)

^--- Congrats!

I like the added bonus that it's the same size as the iPad, handy dandy. So tempting...

62 here. I was waiting for a different card to show up in the mail because I'd prefer to use that one, but I wanted to get in under the wire just in case they stop allowing pledges now that the financing goal is met (although it doesn't look like that'll happen).

Depending on how the financial situation is looking in January, I may pledge for a second one, try to hack together a wireless version and use it with one of these.

Matt from KMI responded to the comments on CDM and addressed my concerns as well as a few others:
Matt from KMI on CDM wrote:Hi!,
Wanted to clear some things up/ answer some questions I’ve seen here…
1, We’re already working on seamless software integration… Out of the box, QuNeo will be plug and play– it’ll send CCs and notes just like any pad controller (just more CCs and more Notes)!
2, $200 is the street price. $200 will get you a QuNeo.
3, There are quite a lot of LEDs, we’re almost at the maximum number. It will work with the iPad, though (like the SoftStep and 12 Step) you’ll need an adapter and you’ll have to power it from the wall or from our MIDI expander…
4, As far as mapping goes, the QuNeo will have a “shift” or “mapping mode” button (the blue one, near the transport controls) which will allow for one source to be sent out at a time. The LEDs on the pads will display different colors based on the type of control you are mapping!
5, The software editor will be useful for creating customized mappings. Things like multi-touch functionality will be customizable with the software. The software will not be necessary to use the QuNeo, as it will be preprogrammed to function out of the box.
Also, sorry for the typos– I’ve been working non-stop on this release and obviously missed some stuff, probably out of excitement.
As always, questions can be posted here or e-mailed to Matt@KeithMcMillen.com !
I’m looking forward to playing my QuNeo and I’m glad everyone else is too!
Thanks,

He responded to part of my question as well. Unfortunately it'll need to be plugged into a powered USB hub or their powered MIDI adapter to work with an iPad.

Looks like I get to keep hacking away at a battery powered hub solution.
