5ms out good enuff?
U folks think 5ms out is fine for live performances? Its 10ms as a round trip but I don't have anything going in - just out. This is with an m-audio fast track pro on my laptop.
My main machine uses m-audio profire 610 with a 3ms round trip firewire. But my laptop doesn't have fw. I tried my friends Motu Audio Express and assumed it would be faster but its 20ms round trip at best which I found odd. ASIO of course, win7.
It feels fine when I'm djing or controllerism-ing-age. I'm pretty much tapped out on cash so I can't justify spending more money to shave a few ms right now - maybe in the future sure - but I can't right now.
Also - my lappy doesn't have a card slot so a fw pci isn't doable.

This is all you need to know. Who else do you need to impress?Ninja-Matic wrote:It feels fine when I'm djing or controllerism-ing-age.

Ok then. I was just curious if anyone thought I should shoot for better.Warrior Bob wrote:This is all you need to know. Who else do you need to impress?Ninja-Matic wrote:It feels fine when I'm djing or controllerism-ing-age.

If you are planning to do something live, it is best to practice on what you plan to use so that you know what you're in for. That is an indirect answer to your question, which in the end, only you can answer. Last tip, try to pretend you don't even know the amount of latency. See if it is workable

Re: 5ms out good enuff?
Well I really can't notice any difference between my 1.5ms out on my main beast with firewire or my laptop with fast track pro at 5ms out.
Been playing some Bach and Mozart most of the morning putting my fingering to the test while listening both on my monitors and cans alternatively without issue.
5ms seems fine.
I guess as I am moving from behind the scenes to on stage - this is an entirely new environment for me and i want to make sure my performance is up to par.
I think my biggest issue is fingering. Been a long time since I had to play to a "T" - being a studio nerd I never had to worry about screw ups
Thanks again, guys.

No problem! Yeah, I think the only reason to shoot for better than 5ms is if there's some reason why you need it. Until then... rock out

Sound travels about 1 ft/ms, so 5 ms latency is like listening to a speaker 5 feet away from you.
Don't trust anyone who says they can feel a 5ms delay, they're either a liar or an alien.

what happens if you're 2.5 ft away from the left speaker and 7.5 ft away from the right speaker?scutheotaku wrote:Unless you're standing five feet away from the speaker, then it's like listening to a speaker 10 feet away from youtwisted-space wrote:Sound travels about 1 ft/ms, so 5 ms latency is like listening to a speaker 5 feet away from you.

^ and with your head turned left and extra ear wax in your right ear on Tuesday while standing next to an alien that can pick up 6.5 milliseconds of latency who's wearing earplugs??? then what?
THEN WHAT!?!
this shit's too complicated to keep going. i'm selling all my gear and living in hobbit hole until late December 2012.
P.S. Buckwheat says 5 ms is Otay!
