Smart Objects in Live ala Adobe Suite

Post by imperial_mic » Mon Oct 26, 2009 9:14 pm

Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash all have a similar feature of Smart Object/Symbols.
This is where artwork can be linked to a single source and by editing the single source, the user edits all instances of the artwork through the project.

Example in Ableton Live:
Editing a clip in live view will edit the corresponding clip(s) in the session view

This creates a greater connection between the two views in Ableton Live and makes a more intuitive ways to edit clips.

this would be references versus copies, then, in most other programs (and for programmers as well).

i'd like this yes.

yes, ghost/alia/linked/reference clips or whatever you call them would be nice to have.

It seems like a natural feature to add to the mix (no pun intended).
I would really love to see this feature come into fruition.

But the question is how would one go about making a smart object?
How would one know what clips are smart objects?
How would one implement the feature without compromising the interface conventions already existing in ableton live?

ps. don't forget to vote!

Did this feature ever get implemented? If so, what is it called?

Sorry I didn't read the post correctly... I was thinking of editing more in the way Smart Objects work... e.g. open a track up into a completely new project, edit it and save it, which then renders the audio back to the flat track in the project above it...

Does that make sense?

I found ghost clips useful in other daws but the way I'm working between Arrangement and Session is pretty good. For me, it would clutter the workflow and be more destructive, more admin work. I can see how it's useful, but not my taste the way my workflow has grown in Live. Color coding and naming clips, transferring edits from Arrangement to Session and vise-versa work well already imo.

For me, the biggest help between clip/arrangement would be to record automation into clips in clip view, or to bounce automation into clips in arrange, then drag them back to clip view. So if this idea did that... then yeah!

I would be really interested in the smart objects/instances idea for instruments, for example, making a drum kit out of one sound, then easily altering one parameter in every sound, without planning and making that a macro beforehand. Posted more on that here.
