Anyone have expierience with User Config MIDI script?
Hey all,
So I'm trying to control perameters in Reason via macros in ableton, this video gives a quick rundown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmW-bBqt_9Y
- I am going into my app data folder-->roaming-->ableton-->version-->preferences--->user remote scrips-->Thor. I created the thor folder, and copied the script into it. I looked up the cc's and followed the instructions (labeling input and output as "Thor" as well. but whenever I open preferences I do not see anything, I have a couple of hunches though:
- origionally I could not access my appdata folder via my Admin--->user (It wouldnt show, so I would have to search for in my start menu as %appdata%, a strange problem). so mabye ableton has trouble recognizing it too?
- perhaps both reason and ableton need to be open for it to work, but ive tried it this way and still no luck.
- I am controlling two instances of thor with combinator, and I only want to control one. It is possible that I should enter "combinator" or "thor 1" instead.
-other than that, im without a paddle here /: any advice?
-Cheers

Re: Anyone have expierience with User Config MIDI script?
the midi scripts are designed to allow physical devices to interact with Live. That doesn't mean that what you are attempting is impossible - only that it might be complicated. also, it reads as if you want to use one Reason object to control another Reason object. I believe it must be easier to do this in Reason. maybe sending midi to Reason via iac/midiloopbank and using rewire to move audio about. i think rewire can take care of the midi clock as well. i don't use Reason anymore so I can't test any of this out.

Hi,
Don't have a Windows machine to test it, but I reckon it is that path problem. Full path should be:
\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\[your version]\Preferences\User Remote Scripts\
So make sure the username part corresponds with the one that you're currently logged in as.
Also, note that the custom script names appear right at the end of the control surface lists in Live, so scroll all the way down to check...
You shouldn't have to have Reason running for the script to appear in the list, no.

thanks for the replies
I checked my folder path and it is as you mentioned; would it create any problems if I created copied the app data folder into my user folder? As I mentioned, I could not actually find the app data folder in my C drive without typing in %appdata% into my search menu. strangely when I did locate the folder, the path was as it should be (C-->User-->Appdata), all I did was copy the app data folder into the User folder so that I could locate it in the future without searching (I also assumed that it may have been the problem). would this change anything?
If it makes any difference, here is a section of my remote script:
# Config File for User-defined Instant Mappings
# We assume that the controls on your MIDI controller
# send CCs (except for pads). All controls that do not have
# an explicit channel setting are expected to use the
# global channel. CCs & Notes are counted from 0-127
# and channels from 0-15.
[Globals]
# The channel that the controller should send on
GlobalChannel: 0
# If your controller is connected via USB, replace ControllerName
# with the name of the respective port. Live will then try to
# recognize the ports for you when you select your Instant-Mappings
InputName: Thor 1
OutputName: Thor 1

Re: Anyone have expierience with User Config MIDI script?
Still reckon it's your path - the actual content of the UserConfiguration.txt file doesn't affect whether Live can see it or not and hence whether it appears in your device list in MIDI preferences. Maybe other Windows users can help out - what version of Windows are you using?

Is your modified text-file a plain-text-file. Means, did it have a .txt file extension?
cheers, palmer
