File browser desperately needs an overhaul

Post by AaronShaver » Thu Dec 08, 2011 5:11 pm

So I'm about to purchase Live 8 Suite soon, and it comes with 1600 sounds. I feel like the UI already has trouble supporting all the racks/presets/effects/etc. in Intro. I can't imagine how crowded Suite is going to look. Someone in another thread mentioned using colors. That's a great idea. Another option is tabs for each of the major types of files. The tree view just doesn't work with huge sets.

It's a shame, because Live is otherwise one of the most clean and intuitive UIs out there. That's one of the big reasons I chose Live over something like Reason! But that file browser has got to get the same treatment as the rest of the app...

The user folders help, but I agree that it could be much less crowded. It feels like too many clicks and too much scrolling to go from the audio effects folder to MIDI effects for instrument folders. I would like to see a couple more "top-level" folders/tabs on the browser. Maybe split out Live instruments, midi effects, and audio effects into their own top-level folders?
I need a baby sit my boys and work the day job plug-in.

Live's concept seems to be scrolling jungle. You just need to 'scroll' 'scroll' 'scroll'! It's a single window world. Scroll is your friend

By far my most wanted new feature in Live 9. The concept of a Windows style browser in a music app never sat well with me. NI are the worst at this though...

I thought Reason did a pretty decent job at it too.

Feels like this problem also relates to the single monitor mentality. If you could open up the browser in it's own window, maybe on another monitor, the browser would be much more useful.

A DJ app style file browser that can be controlled with midi please.

And proper iTunes / playlist integration would make life oh so easy (yes I know some people hate it).

A separate instrument browser popup per channel perhaps .. e.g. click insert instrument and drop down that allows you to select the plugin (via midi OR keyboard of course).

The only thing with live that really bugs the crap out of me is its dependency on a mouse for stuff that could be easily selectable via midi or keyboard commands..... for spontaneous live use grrrrrrr.
