Ableton and Kaoss Pad set up - little help needed :)

Post by lrose » Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:33 pm

I'm pretty new so bare with if my explanation is a bit rubbish haha.
So I've written a nice synth line in Ableton, instead of using the effects in Ableton I'd just like to use my Kaoss Pad 3 to create the effects instead so that they actually save to the track as well.
Is that even possible for a start, and if so how would I set it up? :D

Yep! You need to have some extra outputs and inputs on your audio interface.

There are a couple of ways to go about this, but the basic idea is the same: route the audio out of your synth track, through the Kaoss pad, and route the pad's output back into your interface and record it in Live somehow.

The way I like to do it is to use an External Effect device in the synth track's chain, and set its ins/outs to match the ins and outs you have the Kaoss pad connected to. Then create a new audio track, and set its input to the synth track's output. Record to taste.

I like to do it this way because you can also put other effects after the Kaoss pad, both hardware or software, and can record the result of all of them - the track's input is just whatever comes out of the whole chain.

yeh, the "external audio effect" device is the way to go. When I was setting my KP3 up, I tried sorting it out just using audio tracks, and ran into all sorts of weird feedback issues. Warrior Bob's suggestion is definitely the best as far as I can tell.

Ah sweet, thanks a lot, I'll give it a bash over the next few weeks and let you know how I get on :D
Knowing me I'll manage to screw it up somehow haha

Nothing you can't fix once you've figured it all out :)
