electric drum kit to aleton live 8

Post by brouts14 » Wed Dec 14, 2011 11:52 pm

Hi everyone

I have an electric drum kit I have hooked up to my PC and I want to put through Ableton live 8 to record live drum tracks, but I am having a hard time getting the configuration settings right. Can anyone help? I am running off Windows XP, and I have the drums hooked up with a MIDI to USB cord.

What does your drum kit pop up as in able tons midi devices? All you should need to do is set the drum midi device midi Track option to ON. You should see a indicator in the top right blink every time you trigger a drum. Then, you need to either set your drums to trigger the required notes in the drum rack or map the drums to the pads. An electric drum kit should operate the same as any midi keyboard or drum programmer.

When you play the midi drums you are getting sound yes?

If you are recording into arrange view, make sure the "back to arrangement" button is set. Also, if you are monitoring the midi input be sure you don't have the monitor still set on. It should be on auto.

It is recording something, but when I play it back I can here the other tracks and not the drums. I must be missing something in the config.

are you trying to record the midi and play it through a drum rack? or trying to put the audio into your set?

From what it sounds like, you are trying to get audio through USB MIDI, I think what you need to do is get the audio from your drum kit going into an audio track in live. Thats how i play an electric kit through ableton in my band, but I also use MIDI from the drum module running into drum racks in live for some custom kits.

So I should go through an audio track instead of a midi track?

what i'm saying is, to get audio from the drum kit, you need to run the audio from the module, into an audio interface, into an audio track in live.

audio does not travel through midi.... it only transmits note values (pitch, velocity, etc) and control change numbers. you need to run the stereo audio cables into ableton using an interface, if you cant do that, try putting some kind of drum rack preset in the midi track you want to play
