can you Import cubase songs?

Post by olafalafel » Mon Jun 27, 2005 10:54 pm

Hello,

I've been working with cubase sx 2.1, and I'm thinking of getting live.

Is it possible to import SX songs?

would i need to export the songs as midifiles then import the midi files to live?

I use quite a few synths, drum machines(hardware), have some VST instruments and some wav files in my cubase tracks

Don't want to get the program if I need to remake all the tracks made in cubase.

It's probably a stupid question but:

FAQ don't mension this.

I've done a search in the forum but constantly get over 2000 matches that actually don't match what i'm asking.

Google isn't helping either.

can any one tell me if it's possible and how it could be done?(is it a lot of work :D)

Maybe I'll join the club ;)

You cannot import cubase SX songs.... The formats are too different I think.
What you describe would be ok. You could still sswap application, say if you have 10 to 40 songs.... if you have 300 songs to transfert it could be a one month job, but do you really need to transfert all of them ?

Thanks mate,

Well I'd like to start with 10 tracks, for a live act see if that works.

So I guess exporting and importing as midi files should work.

Live costs 435 euro's here, will check out the demo first.

I know a guy with Live 4 on his laptop, will see if he want to try and import a track to his laptop and hook it up to my gear. if it works fo 1 track then i will get the software.

Thanks for your help!

It WILL be quite a bit of work transferring the songs. The only thing you can export/import is the basic MIDI files. You will have to set up the instruments, effects, routings, levels etc from scratch.

If you just want to play the songs, you are probably much better off exporting them as audio from cubase and importing that into Live. You could even export different instruments on different tracks, chop them into loops and you would be able to mix/modify/tweak them on the fly.

Why do you want to import them into Live? Why not just keep Cubase for your old stuff and start using Live for all you new?

well basically, I want to import my tracks into live cause from what i hear it's the best proggy for live performance. which is the next step for us to take with our hobby.

Most of our tracks are midi tracks to our midi gear. there are a few VST instruments and some samples but most is midi.

I will have to have a try, my mate agreed to come over and hook up his laptop with live, we'll see if it work for us. e's gonna show me the ropes. as it Live look pretty different than cubase(from what i've seen.

Thanks for the replies.

Ok, I see. If you want to experiment yourself, download the demo. I believe it will allow you to do anything the full version does, except saving your sets.

The get real benefit from live for live performance you will have to do some serious rearranging anyway, so it might not really be any unneccesary work.

I did it with lots of songs, actually most of my Cubase projects. The only problem might be lack of hardware scripts in Live so you have to go by numbers. Anyway I like to keep Live projects audio only, the midi is just used while working on tunes. Finalizing everything as audio and then importing tracks to Live is the easiest, most reliable and very fast way. However I did also mixed audio and midi projects imports, no big deal.
