If you get up near Boston, I'd come to your show.

Nice stuff!

Another nice one!

Do you mix these after playing, or are we hearing the raw mix? The stereo placement and dynamics of each instrument sounds great, either way.

I'd love to see a short vid explaining a bit about what each instrument contributes, and your hardware mixer setup. I'm curious how you get all those instruments working so well together.

Thanks!

Thank you! It's the raw mix, although I am bumping up the volume a bit before I render the video. I'll purposely record a couple dB lower than optimal to avoid possible clipping during louder / bass-heavy sections.

Thanks for the compliments on the mix! The levels of each instrument are getting adjusted as I'm playing, but over the past year all of the EQ's, compressors, and effects on the individual channels have been adjusted a lot. Still needs work (cymbals sound harsh at times) but thanks for mentioning the mix! I'm basically taking the two-channel Control Room outs from my mixer, converting that to 1/8" and sending it directly into the Zoom Q3HD with about 10 feet of 1/8" extension cable between the two. On paper, it should probably sound like garbage, but the 1/8" input on the Q3HD is surprisingly great. The iPhone's audio is deleted before rendering.

I would definitely enjoy recording a vid which shows how everything works, including what my template in Ableton looks like, and how everything's plugged in. It's definitely nothing fancy and nothing I'm keeping a secret, and I think most people would be surprised at the simplicity. The analog instruments are all plugged in to a Yamaha MG12/4 mixer, and the Aux Sends are connected to an M-Audio AP 24/96 I bought in 2001. The Rhodes is on its own channel, running through an MXR Zak Wylde overdrive. The Moog and MoPho share the second audio channel. The only way I've gotten a lead and bass instrument to share a channel without too many issues was to eliminate any compression and just ride the volume knob whenever I play either of those two instruments. But when I add a 4th analog instrument, I will definitely need to buy an interface with at least four in's. The EQ is virtually flat across the whole template, although each instrument has had its own bass boosted to different amounts (in other words, the bass wasn't boosted on the master fader but independently on each channel).

The Oxygen 25 is controlling an instance of NI's Massive, loaded with a custom patch I made (simple 2-Osc sawtooth waves running through a lowpass filter) and I can adjust the ADSR envelope and the reverb / delay mix on the Oxygen 25 itself (along with volume). The MPD26 is controlling a custom NI Kontakt multi patch made up of 6 or 7 drum "instruments" containing a mix of NI's Battery library and my own samples. The cymbals, for example, are my own samples I recorded from a Zildjian K Custom 22" Ride direct to a DAT recorder in the late 90's.

If anyone has any other specific questions, feel free to ask.

Here's a new one, minus the analog gear. I was testing a portable setup on a Macbook Pro running a Presonus FireStudio Mobile, and used only USB controllers.

Here's a new one, using analog keyboards, USB controllers, and iOS devices (iPad 2 and iPhone 4).
Also using Lemur integrated with Live, controlling effects on an instance of NI's Massive (played on the Oxygen 25 and iPad 2).

If you decide to do a video... personally I would love to see one with your portable setup as mentioned above. I would guess that such a video would have more of an audience as less people would own analogue gear but can afford a few controllers... anyways, I have also subscribed to your YT. 8)
