Send for clip but not entire track?

Post by NothingButInitials » Tue Dec 27, 2011 7:03 pm

I'm trying to send to a return for only one clip in a track. I've automated the send level in the envelope for the clip, but found that I have to have the send up on the track in order for this to work so I've had to go into each of the other clips in the track and set the envelope to 0 for those tracks - it works, but is a bit of a PITA to have to remember to do so for additional clips in the track.

I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this so I don't have to do the additional step on the other clips in the track just so the one clip can have some verb on it...

The reason you have to have the Send up on the track for the clip envelope to work is that clip envelopes are relative to the actual setting. I think absolute clip envelopes are a feature request already made by many. The easiest work around that I can think of is to duplicate the track.

Thanks, that makes sense in the context of the current clip/track relationship... The workaround I'm using gets the job done...

I'm new to Ableton Live and this forum (and really to electronic music production and DAWs in general) so I appreciate the resources and knowledge provided here...

I really like the idea of using Session View for composition and arranging (seems to make the most sense if I ever get around to using Live for any type of performance) but little things like the Clip/Track and Clip/Scene relationships seem to limit that a bit...

Personally, I never automate send, volume and pan levels. I normally insert a utility device, for which you can set the min and max values. In your case I would insert a utility device on the bus channel. Set the send level at the position that suits the track and automate the volume of the bus channel for the specific clip.

How about using an instrument rack. Set up two chains in the rack, one with the send effect and one without.
You can then use the chain selector and automate it in the same way using clip envelopes.

With a bit of playing around you can get it set up so that the default for new clips falls into the range that selects the chain without the effect.
