Octatrack anyone?

Post by naburo » Tue Dec 27, 2011 9:56 pm

Hi Folks,

are there any Elektron Octatrack users around here,
who can share some insights about this instrument.

I can not decide if I should give it a try,
somehow it sounds tempting for live purposes, such as remixing (my main interest is looping),
but on the other hand, there is a good chance that Elektron has got some good marketing strategies at hand.
And the whole thing is only hyped.

Anyway I am still a Ableton Enthusiast since Live 4

All the best to you in 2012

Cheers :D

Mine just arrived earlier today :) Converting all my Ableton live sets to play on the Elektron gear, and so far it's been awesome. Follow along here if you're curious:

quick Q, the octatrack doesn't sync samples to one another like live or it does?

Yes it does, tempo detection is pretty accurate if your loops are trimmed right, correctable if not,

Thanks you for your reply Tarekith

The thread you posted, gave me answers to quite a few of my Q´s
The OT seems to be really really nice.

edit: actually i started messing with ableton and the octa a was able to get them synced. works pretty good, you have to adjust the midi delay but you can get them pretty tight.

I just got one. It's clear that while there's some overlap they do different things well. I am still learning the OT but i am excited about the possibilities for improvisation with it. I have had Live since 1.5 and have no plans to stop using Live (there are some things it does better and I know it inside out), but I haven't been as excited about a new instrument in a long time. I'm just trying to learn 1 new skill a day on the OT.

Thx for the video. Wow, I can't imagine the amount of time transferring entire Ableton sets into that piece by piece & getting them to sound somewhat the same. The difference in effects, etc. Mixed down tracks or loops would probably be OK.

I'm just finishing up transferring some of my stuff from Guru to Geist and it seemed to take forever! And of course there's the little quirks from one format to another where it won't quite sound the same.

All my Live sets are done as 32 bar, 24/44.1 wav file loops, so it wasn't too bad. Mainly just getting the tweaky stuff down to 4 bar loops, the pads and fills are still 32 bars, and converting everything to 16bit. Definitely took some time getting it all laid out and organized in the OT, but not as long as I expected.
