effect-automation on single notes??

Post by toeman » Sun Jan 01, 2012 12:50 pm

My wish is to automate a single note in my midi track.
For example, I use Stylus RMX in multimode (groove machine) and export the grooves to a midi track in Ableton.
Then I would like to automate (put effects on) ONLY the snare on for example note: C2

Is there a possibility to do this?
Or is there a possibility to send a single note to an audio track and automate it there?

I am afraid this is not possible in Live. You will have to get the audio of that single snare separately.

I heard cubase has per note automation... but I am not sure.
My English is not perfect, I know... Sorry about that.

how bout you freeze/flatten that midi, slice to new midi track (set to beats) then drop your fx just on the snare hit slot

@ Der_

Are u serious? Is that possible in Cubase?
Man then Ableton should DEFINATELY get that into new editions. Man what an opening up of an ENTIRE new world would that be.
Can u imagine? Different effects on every note you play?

@Simmer

Could you be more specific?
You mean just treating the snare as a seperate midi track? Because that is exactly what I am trying to evade actually.
But please elaborate more on what you mean.

if this is an on-the-fly performance technique you are after what i'm saying is not valid..

not a separate midi track though...

if you freeze/flatten the midi track you have it will become audio, then 'slice to new midi' that audio bit, with the slice mode set to 'transients', this will give you a drum rack, still in order, with your hits separated into slots...put the fx you want on any slot you want...

could be i'm not following you, not the first time, haha

Maschine can do this. Take a look at its step automation:

@delicioso

I know, even one of the instruments of Ableton itself can do it, but that's the problem, I don't want to be forced to a specific instrument to be able to automate a note.
I am a huge fan of the Stylus RMX groovebox and I like to import grooves into a midi track and then play with the notes.

Now if I want to automate one of the samples I, now, need to single it out on a midi track OR like you said, use an instrument that enables automation per note....

But it would be such a HUGE leap if ableton would allow people to automate different notes so you are not bound to a specific instrument and can u imagine what a WORLD of possibilities that would open up if you could automate every single note?

@simmer

Hmmm, think you mean something different but still worth to check out though.... :D

Its called "VST Expression 2" you'll have to scroll down a little) and is limited to MIDI controllers as I understand. But I tink until the instrument you are controlling can receive a lot of different MIDI data, this should work. As I said, not sure though.

OMG!!

This is a MUST-have for Ableton otherwise they are seriously lagging behind!

Amazing find my friend....If this isn't in the future ableton I guess I am going to shift to Cubase....

man, you can always just record that note back and bounce to another channel as a wav file and run the effects there. the note will be in the same place obviously. simple. unless i'm missing something.
