Syncing abletons tempo to a live electric drum kit via midi?

Ok, so I got my drummers roland electric drum kit hooked up via midi to ableton. I want ableton to be able to sink up it's tempo with his tempo in a live setting; this way our bands tempo is synced up for any arpeggiations or effects. I've just been tempo taping it myself, but it's kinda hard with a bass guitar in hand. Now I know I can map his bass drum to the tap, but that only works for four to the floor drum beats. There has to be a better way so that we can always be synced up even in irregular and break beat drum styles. I haven't bought max for live yet, but If anyone has some good ideas i am willing to buy it and work with them on figuring out this dilemma.

You're probably better off having your drummer sync to something than having something sync to your drummer. After you get around that obstacle, you can have a few options.

Just go into Live's preferences and under the midi sync tab turn on the "sync" button of the input of the drum set. after you do this a button in the top left corner of the main Live window will appear in the tempo section labeled 'ext'. after you enable that button Live will sync to the midi clock on the drum kit.

but unless the effects you're using are coming from the module of your drummer's set, i agree with the cat above me... and even then you could slave the drum set to Live's tempo... idk... im pretty high if it wasnt obvious.

HAHA i think i may have misread the question.. adn yeah i totally agree with the dude above me.. n if your drummer can't play to a metronome make him learn to... working with ones who cant sucks

Saw this in another post - it really is best to have your drummer play to a click track as others are suggesting. Trying to do this the other way around is going to cause you no end of problems.
