Loading Ableton projects after fresh Windows install.

Post by IcyIce » Wed Jan 04, 2012 4:11 pm

Hi,
I'm doing a fresh windows install. I'll be installing all the VST plugins I already had there too. I'll be also installing the same version of Ableton I'm already using.
My question is, would I be able to smoothly load all my old projects on the new windows as long as I've installed the VSTs they were using? Even if I installed the plugins in a different location "then loaded the new location into ableton custom VST folder".
Thank you,

Yes. Your projects don't care were your VSTs are installed as long as Ableton Live knows where they are and they show up in the Live Browser it should work.

TIP#1 - Since you're doing a fresh install here's something I tell everyone using Win7 64bit.
Install ALL your VST in the same place and make sure it's NOT in a protected folder like C:\Program Files X86\...
Install you VSTs in C:\VstPlugins or somewhere like that directly in the root of C:\ because some VSTs don't like being in protected folders that require admin rights.

TIP#2 - Open all you Live Projects and do a Collect All And Save before backing them up in preparation for installing the OS again.
This will save any samples and drumrack sounds in the same folder as the project. This way you won't loose anything.

That was pretty helpful. Thanks a lot.
