1. welcome to SF..

2. room within a room is the only option I know that works.. the big studios I've visited that have adjacent businesses have this design.. bass traps and such will do nothing to block any of that out..

3. my option is much cheaper..
a. go to California St. and look for a Hair salon
b. sit down and when they call you, tell him your not actually there to get a hair cut, but the other thing.
c. go to the back where he will show you the best weed
d. he will offer you to smoke.. kindly accept.
e. he will offer to cut your hair afterwards.. you can decline..
f. buy what you need and share with neighbors as a token of your friendship.
g. invite neighbors over..
h. kindly say if it ever gets too loud, to just call you.. this for the most part will solve your problem.. as long as your not constantly blasting it 24/7, it's fine.. it's better to mix at lower volumes anyways and then just periodically check loud volumes..

Ive been the "victim" of neighbours playing with too much bass.
That being said, I hope you take the complaining seriously cause I almost got a gun and started smashing down doors..
Now I live in a garage.. Finally some peace 8)

If I may ask, you know 8x8x7 is not that large of a room and I am wondering just how loud do you plan on getting in such a small space?

The Phat Conductor wrote:I have a big garage in a detached house with stone foundations cut into a mountainside for my new studio.

The problems are

1. flimsy garage door with air holes (can be permanently closed)
2. window behind washer/dryer/furnace that is tough to block
3. thin walls (it's california, people don't insulate much here)

I was thinking

-'room-within-a-room' as far from door/window as possible
-sandbags or something with MASS to block the bass from going out the garage door

do any of you know cheap ways to do this? the commercial 'room-within-a-room' solutions would be like $7K for what i need (8x8x7)

delivery would be good too (i live in SF and don't drive)

thanks everyone!

...It is allmost impossible to block the bass in old houses and garages. Best tip i can give you is buy yourself a couple of good headphones like the Sennheizer HD-25 and get used to work with them in the night, your mixes and work will benefit from this "treatment" and it works! Save the money! Dont even try to think you will get it right, you wont! I live in my own new house and i use Headphones even if i dont have to because my music and mixing really benefits from booth systems. 8)

Rent a different room. Don't make music while the neighbors are home. Maybe you could pay them to tolerate your bass. Did you talk to your neighbors? Maybe they don't care or can't hear very well.
