Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta soon...
I was thinking it would be quite stable....care to make it interesting?
Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta soon...
The Thing is, I know i have spent a lot of time re arranging my head to the way Live works.
In Bitwig Studio, with the arrange session view, scenes are on top and flowing left to right.
I always thought this would be a better way to do it! Kinda does make more sense to think about your song being layed out that way (imo)##
but i lay in wait with baited breath, and look forward to ableton's "response"!

ctrl + left/right = select transient
ctrl + shift + left/right = select between transients
ctrl + space = play selection

I honestly don't care if it's a hoax or real. I just want Ableton-style workflow in 64-bit. Personally, I don't think it's a hoax because of the Linux support -- that's the kind of thing that needs to start at a really low level for an app like this. I guess 9 could be a complete re-write (which might also explain why it has taken 3 years) -- but I doubt it.

Just saw these question on GearSlutz from a user, think they are interesting:
So have the missing features Live users have wanted for years; 64 bit , multiple screen support, multi track edit etc. not been implemented by Ableton because their coders left? Did they leave because the boss refused to allow these features and they felt it their duty to give these to the clip triggerers of the world?

That's one hell of a facepalm if it went like that.

Would be actually a wise move from bitwig to allow to import live sets.Warrior Bob wrote:Bitwig may as well declare this thread their official forum.
No matter how this plays out we're all going to have some neat software to play with. I'm very much looking forward to trying Bitwig out, and seeing what Ableton does in response.
I think it's pretty funny that we're already seeing comments where people want to be able to open their Live sets in Bitwig, since it looks that similar. There's some clever marketing going on here.
Berlin is awesome.
You can assume that people that are into the live workflow have it allready while people that dont like it wont be intersted too much in bit wig either..
That they fullfill so many live user wishes shows that the bitwigs plan to take over live users..
So an import option would make the decission for many live users easier.
And..they dont need to backward engineer evything because they probably know how abletons file format works inside out.

Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta soon...
There's the rub.
If there's beef between them the most one could hope for is some license to convert it natively or 3rd party.
If they're cool with each other and migration is allowed and easy to implement then one wonders if there issome hanky-panky goin on...
Otherwise I don't think it would happen but it's not

Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta soon...
well, the format changed to gzipped xml around L8.013 , so although they left during the public beta of L8 ... it wouldn't need Mad Science™ to open an .als and pull something from it. However - how would they deal with exactly replicating 'beats/tones/the other' warpmodes, and usage of Sampler, or operator? You can run similar stretchy algo's and similar instruments, but surely it will sound different. I'm not sure loading a set and having it sound different is what people want.betterbox wrote: So an import option would make the decission for many live users easier.

The most likely import success would be for DJ type users, currently loading mp3s into a vast liveset. Those users could benefit from multi-sets and would probably only need access to the warp markers and any modern warp algo. I wonder which one they have gone with?
anyway.
tldr;
they could open the .als, but it might only benefit certain users in certain cases.
Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta soon...
its anyway not necessary to have a perfect import..as nice that would be.. just roucgh content without automation and fx rack data would safe so much time allready that it would be a usefull tool..
100% patch compatibility is probably not really achiveable.. but gigabytes in clips and audio recording and all teh warpdata.. and arrangemaent positions.. that would be great..
Its probaly true that one cant migrare completly to a version 1.0
However.. thats what many live users did when it came out first.. and it was way more rudimentary than the bitwig now..

Riveting thread, I finished poo around page 3 and am terrified of the idea of standing up at this point. Live 10... Bitwig 2.5... Pins and needles all over!!

Fun times!
Aside from anything else, and not implying anything here, but Ableton would surely be daft not to have some kind of patent on stuff like the recording of triggered clips live into a linear arrangement? Maybe not.
I wonder if this thing will have the audio groove engine? That's one of the most impressive parts of Live 8 I think.

Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta soon...
I think the difference between this and say when live first came out...live was only used for audio clips and stems. Those producing in other platforms could just import their stems as they went along and as live developed more capabilities, they learned these capabilities as they went. Here we are running into a fully functioning almost live replica that people won't have 10 years to learn and immerse into the environment. I think early adapters in this setup will like what they see right off, or write it off just as fast. I do look forward to the competition and hope it pushes both companies to become something greater than they anticipated. The only real deal breakers for me would be a lack of ability to use current live-focused controllers (or lack of support from manufacturers). But I am really itching for a more in-sync hands on controller with a live-like environment similar to the way maschine works. If BW can pull this off...they may have a new customer.
