How hilarious would it be if Bitwig wound up not finishing/releasing any of the collaboration features due to problems with development?

Then it could TRULY be called an Ableton clone :D

I'm still kinda convinced there is some crazy shit going on behind the scenes with this. If someone had leaked those photos of Bitwig and said it was Live 9 everyone would have believed it, viewed it as a natural evolution and that they'd finally added all the most requested features.

It's obvious Bitwig are focussing on the features Live users have been asking for in an attempt to boost interest. But as others have said it's maybe more interesting to look at the features they haven't listed. Having worked in IT for 20 years I find it hard to believe that anyone could create a functionally equivalent version of Live from scratch in two years that runs on three different platforms. They either got a lot of help from somewhere, have missed out some major functionality or it isn't going to work properly.

Let's not forget that Ableton haven't been sat around just fixing bugs for three years, so a comparison between Live 8 and Bitwig isn't a fair one. I've got a feeling that if those big user requested features weren't already in Live 9 they will be very soon.

It's us, the end users, that will benefit from this though. A bit of competition can only lead to better products.

Angstrom wrote: Somebody in here said (something like) "how could you ever do it differently?" I can tell you there are plenty of ways. If I was designing a performance DAW I'd be saying things like "our customers are on stage, or potentially on the other side of the studio hitting a hardware controller. So lets make each focused GUI element be able to go huge on (focus) demand, map that hugeness to a midi key or behavioural modifier".
RIGHT!

OR, how about adjustable views of 2 or more tracks simultaneously in session view. In a since, multiple 'blue hands' on different tracks, and in view, all midi mappable.
OR, views in between session track and sends if one chooses
How about track volume sends pans optionally at the bottom or to the left or right in either session or arrangement
Maybe making clips in focus expand with all need visual information and the size be adjustable in preferences.
Automatically expanding and collapsable devices when focused or not.
BUT to be really off the cuff, why not make the rows and columns bigger and more modular, and have a browser that sort of loaded configurations. I am thinking sort of along the line of Traktors samplers stacked up with more knobs, device views, and such, instead of maybe loading samples, you'd be loading modular device builds, and the browser would look more like session view clips.

But yeah, at least name things differently, did the "drum machine" really need to look like drumRacks? Did there need to be a wrench icon? Instead of session and arrangement, why not performance and linear OR sketch and production.

Script builder for controllers?

in depth midi mapping??

Does anyone know how many people are involved with this product? Number of developers? Just a curiosity
Appears to be 3 developers and a few support staff, http://bitwig.com/company.php

from http://www.djtechtools.com/2012/01/12/b ... mpetition/
He got a chance to speak with Bitwig CEO Placidus Schelbert for a couple of minutes – thanks for talking with us, Placidus!

When asked about their relationship with Ableton, he said that they (Bitwig) admire Ableton a lot, and want rebuild some good parts of it and extend upon them. Live is a big chunk of software nowadays, and Bitwig wants to create a more focused experience and added features they consider important. They’ve been working on Bitwig Studio for two and a half years already, having invested their own money and being partially backed by a Berlin-based investment bank.

When asked asked if they’re concerned about legal issues arising with Ableton, Placidus assured us that the Bitwig Studio team wrote all the code themselves and that they don’t think they’ll be sued- but he was careful to note that he couldn’t tell for sure that it won’t happen.

Hedgehog also asked about the promised feature of working together via LAN or internet, and learned that while on LAN you all use the same audio-output, collaborating on internet every user will have his own audio settings. That means while your friend has one channel muted you can have totally different settings. Seems like a great way to not have to be emailing project files back and forth, though!

As of right now, there’s no firm release date, but Beta testing will begin in a few weeks. Try as he might, Hedgehog wasn’t able to get any information regarding the price (not even hints!).
Take this for what it is, but it could mean that those features in Bitwig Studio where things that Ableton were/are not going to add to Live and as a result the idea to build a new product was obvious to the Bitwig team.
