I still have moments where I listen to music and not analyze at all. Just the other day, at the end of my last travel, waiting for the suitcase at the airport, I turned on music on my phone/earplugs and had the Jamaican Funk&Soul-compilation (souljazzrecords) on. I couldn't believe the good vibes I got, I was literally dancing while standing there with a huge smile on my face. Music is the best drug so far. Love ain't bad neither, but gives some headaches sometimes.

shadx, if i could find some, i'd test that theory...downside of deep winter in nowheresville....first time i smoked my friend put some big earphones on me and played Dark side of the Moon, start to finish, on vinyl...never forget it 20 yrs later, so theres def something to be said....

terekith, that blog entry is superb...just how i feel, and gives a nice perspective on the stages of mourning still to come....not really mourning for me, i think of this in a neurological perspective...by spending hours a day listening and relistening to a piece in the lab, dissecting it and trying to be an analytical, objective listener, i think the brain gets reformed in a way, tuned toward that kind of listening, as opposed to the 'feeling' mode

my last holdout was classical music, Bach in particular, but now when i listen im thinking how i could sample/flip it with a hiphop beat, LOL

I listen to Classical all the time when I'm not working in the studio, since it's is one of the few styles of music I really don't find myself picking apart. Even as background noise, it's something I can have on and not find myself intently focusing on it inadvertantly.

Exactly the opposite here. I'm more apt to analyze "classical" music because most popular music is so (relatively) simple there's just not as much there to really analyze for long. Actually, even though analyzing music is part of what I do, I don't find it hard to detach and simply enjoy any type of music. Of course "enjoy" is a loaded term because I think there's plenty of enjoyment to be found in detailed analysis of musical works. But that's a more intellectual enjoyment and I'll admit that I go to pop music to sort of "decompress" from my high art listening and just get "mindless", visceral pleasure from it.

I love me some classical Spanish guitar, talk about less is more. But more than classical for general purpose listening I find myself listening to soundtrack music which in a lot of cases could be considered related to classical. I could probably pick it apart musically but it’s so far beyond my general skill set that I usually don’t bother and just enjoy the journey it takes me on. Zimmer gives me a woody.

I didn't know what was a distortion pedal. The old electric guitar in my daddy's house just did a shitty "bling bling" when I tried it...

and yes, now... everything goes thru my cerebral spectrum/beat/harmony/sound textures analyser... and only remains.... TALENT.

Technique is impressive at first, but without talent.... it's VOID.


SO I kinda miss these days... but I now avoid a lots of pointless hyper-produced music since the analyser decodes everything but composition skills...

Interesting read. After I'd started producing I recall the day I first picked something up in another 'pro' track that I'd not heard before, and knew how it was created. I quite enjoy picking at things sometimes but can equally switch off and just listen passively.

As mentioned above, I can listen to soundtrack music very easily - have more pleasure in cojouring the mood of the track than dissecting it.

It's the same with all things though. I have a sideline buisiness doing vinyl signwriting - I now look around recognising fonts in everything

My biggest frustration is when I have a general idea of what the producer did but I can in no way replicate it, and the more simple the song is, the more I find it frustrating. In my productions less isn’t more. Less is just plain bland and lacking.

Even if you took something as basic as a classic House beat with it’s typical bass drum, snare, and open and closed high hat pattern. Should be easy. Well, not for me. The pattern is easy enough, but the sounds and mix…
