MPK-25 simultaneously controlling several instruments?

Post by TechnoRage » Mon Jan 23, 2012 3:50 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know if I can control several instruments with my MPK-25 in one go? What I mean is...when I have loaded a drum-rack in track one and a synth instrument in the second track, I can record enable both tracks. I want to be able to control the drum-rack with my pads and the synth with the keys...

Thanks in advance!

Best regards, Tom

If you press shift while clicking on a record enable button, you can arm several tracks at a time.
you just have to be careful, that the notes you`ll be playing on your synth dont overlap with the notes which your drumsamples are assigned to, otherwise your drums play, while you strike a key or your synth plays while you hit a drumpad.
the only way around this, would be to assign pads and keys to different midi channels , but I don`t know if that is possible on an MPK. If yes you will hav to make the tracks your instruments are on receive only these midi channels (by default they`re receiving all channels). You can set up this on the input tab of each track.

OR, you can have your drumRack track and your Synth tracks input settings to AUTO, and MIDI IN from your MPK. You can make 2 more blank midi Tracks and set them to IN, MIDI IN from the MPK. One of them MIDI OUT to the DrumRack track and set the sub menu to target directly to the DrumRack (bypassing track input). The other Midi track, MIDI OUT to the Synth track and set the sub menu to target directly to the SynthRack (bypassing track input).

This way you can play the instruments always even if a clip is playing in either Track of the AUTO tracks, without having to push record. HOWEVER if you want to record, you can arm both of the tracks set to AUTO.

You could map a button or computer key, to ARM both Tracks.

I use this method a lot, so I can preview my sound before committing to record, OR just play along with what I already have before recording.

Hi,

I have an MPK Mini not a 25.

I play drums on the pads into clips triggered by the keys on two tracks. I use 1 midi channel for the keys and a different one for the pads.

I use keys on another channel to act as switches for my pedalboard for guitar and to control 2 loopers.

I use keys on another channel to play a piano into clips triggered by the pad on another channel.

I had to run Akai's MPK program application, but only once to set the notes for the pads and the channels for the four available programs. What's very cool is that keys and knobs are paired in a single channel and pads on another, so total, with 4 program setups, you could be controlling 8 different tracks with duplicate notes.

Do the other MPKs support splitting functionality among many midi channels?

Grunzlaut, where do I find the input tab on tracks? I'm also trying to play drums on the pads and piano with the keys.

I've only just stepped in to this whole MIDI world and don't know much yet

Thanks.
