Understanding global quantization

Post by 82DMC12 » Tue Jan 24, 2012 3:34 am

Hey everyone,

I have a question I can't seem to figure out. I have a small project I'm working on and all the clips are assigned to pads on my controller. I have them all set to Repeat and the quantization set to 1/16 so I can experiment with some stuttering effects.

In session view, I have no trouble launching clips with the pads. I have my global quantization set to 1 Bar. The problem is when I hit Play on a scene, the scene launch is also quantizing to 1/16th. I want to be able to 'freestyle' on my pads but then play scenes quantized to 1 bar so I don't have to hit the next scene button RIGHT on that last 16th note.

In my Preferences I have:
Default launch mode - trigger
Default launch quantization - global (set to 1 bar above the transport buttons)

Is there a way to have a separate launch quantization for scenes?

Thanks,
Andy

Two options that you probably will not like:

1. Have a button assigned to changing global quant and have all clips set to global. (there is also a keyboard shortcut ctrl+ certain numbers but I am assuming you are avoiding touching the computer at all costs)

2. Make separate channels for jamming/glitchinf and for scene launching. Remove all the stop buttons on the jam channels so that when a scene is triggered, they go unaffected. Any actual clips on that scene would launch, but those could have a different quant setting. Problem with this method is how messy it is and how much real estate it uses :/

OK so now I'm really confused how people use Live to play.... live! So if you are a one-man band playing on a stage, you have to be THAT on the ball that you start the next scene on the last 16th note of the current scene? Or else you risk the rest of the song being off a beat or worse.

What do people usually do? Just deal with it, or do they set the whole song up in Arrangement with a realistic quantization and leave only a couple of tracks open for free-styling, then when you are done and want to continue, hit "Back to Arrangement"? That doesn't really let you extend a breakdown or something in the middle.

This doesn't seem right. There should be a way to do this.

No, what he's saying is arrange all your normal playback clips into scenes using a 1 bar global quant. For any additional clips you want at a smaller quant, insert scenes in between your main ones, and drop the clips in there. That way you can launch a scene normally, then have additional cells for any weird stuff you want to do.

OK I think that makes sense. What do you mean, yur2die4, by "removing all the stop buttons"? Never seen that done before...?

Thanks,

Andy

On any slot in the clip matrix, ctrl+e can remove stop buttons and maybe play ones if I recall.

The other poster definitely added a good detail... I hadn't thought of that haha. I was imagining a whole other section of just parts to rock with. Having them alternate on scenes would be great and fun. And organized haha

Having some clips be set to 1/16 or others to 1 bar. With the combination of being able to switch the global quantization, and removing stop buttons can all probably help you sort this out :D

Yur2die4, I'm just not sure what removing stop buttons would help with? Does that make is so when you go from scene 1 to scene 2 that a scene 1 clip with no stop button will keep playing? I'm at work so can't try it lol. Thanks man.

Yes. If you have a blank spot on a scene row, but the clip is playing elsewhere on that channel, launching the scene will affect (send "stop" command to) that clip. If you had four channels of clips you were triggering randomly on the left, and four channels of clips quantized to one bar on the right, you could have the left ones on the next scene row under, and remove the "Stop" buttons. Then when you launch the clips on the right, the left clips are completely unaffected.

Keep in mind that if you are uncomfortable with that kind of layout, don't do it haha. Most important thing is of course creating the most natural flow for yourself :)
