Dub Toasters, in general
Kool Herc
Afrikaa Bambaataa, he might have his own XM radio show on friday nights but ask somebody if they know Bambataa when the ask you to play more "hip hop" at some random DJ set.
Grandmaster Flash
Furious 5
MC Lyte - Paper Thin
Erick B & Rakim
Kool Kieth
Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique
KRS One - one of the best shows I ever saw in SF circa 2007?
Scratch Pickles
X-Ecutioners
ATCQ, any album
Black Sheep - 1st Album
Cypress Hill - 1st Album
Project Blowed - maybe the "Good Life" documentary?
Mos Def
Jurassic 5
Casual
Roots Manuva - Brand New Second Hand
DJ Screw
One Be Lo
Ise Lyfe
O.F.

just to name a few.

Most of the time when I hear the words "Hip Hop" it's quickly followed by something like "ya know Jay Z, Kanye, Lil Wayne"

Fuck that!

I don't believe it's hip hop.

If rapping over whatever sound is currently fashionable is hip-hop, then I'd like to submit 'Snap - Rhythm is a Dancer' for scrutiny as a potential hip-hop classic.

Once Hip Hop was the collective name of the 4 elements Turntablism, Rap, Breakdancing and Writing (aka Grafiti). It got lost when hip hop moved on and became mainstream and mtv and magazines had to pin labels to records to fuel the sell out. Its the way the story goes.

I know you all slept on them back in the 80s, but this crew had the most style and finesse the rap game ever saw. They were really cooking, no doubt. I think Rakim, KRS, and Big Daddy Kane have all cited this crew as influential to their styles.

Anyway, listen to this classic. It's hot.

I guess.. just saying this is nothing new, or the 'future' of something. If this does end up being the 'future' of hiphop, it's only because dubstep is one of the trendiest and popular forms of electronic music right now.

When I dj shows in my city it's only been the past year or so some of the hiphop crews have been asking for dubstep tracks to freestyle over.. and it's not because they've got their ears to the ground for fresh new sounds.. If that was the case, they'd have heard about dubstep years ago instead of just recently. IMO it just seems like a easy catalyst to make yourself a career, or revive what you once had by attaching yourself to whatever is hip/trendy/popular.

I dunno, I just think hiphop used to push the boundaries, and innovate, and have something to say.. and I'm sure that kinda stuff is still out there if you look.. But a well known, historic group attaching themselves to a current music trend is certainly a decline if I ever saw one.

It gets harder and harder to find current hip hop that has any of these qualities. Damn shame.
