sub bass

Post by Mismoplastico » Wed Feb 08, 2012 11:37 pm

i'm looking to generate some serious sub bass frequencies. i am familiar with the whole corpus approach, but i was hoping for some alternatives. i've made satisfactory sub bass support loops using an mc-202, but i am still not 100% satisfied with my results. if anyone has any techniques or hardware/software they like please let me know. i've listed two different examples of what i am after below. the speedy j example has a very wet muddy sub bass level that floats through the whole song, while the skudge remix has only a faint layer tucked beneath the kickers. i am interested in anything/everything i can get...

Operator > Sine wave > Saturation / Distortion

All the weight with added character.

Lovely =)

do ether of you have examples i might listen to? i admit that i don't really use operator much these days but i'm sure i could work it back into the fold if the results were good enough. how would you suggest i use it? one sustained note with a side chaining compressor sent to the kick drum? im after the whole head rocking from back to forth from the deep "whum" of the subbass washes in between the kickers. i am definitely NOT looking for anything even remotely close to the dubstep approach.

Just by comparison of the tracks you posted, I would say use the "808 Kick" or "Kick Analogue" thats in the Operator 808 Kit folder as a starting point. Tweak to taste, add compression, maybe Tube Warmer, or Saturator.

set corpus's resonance type to ether membrane or plate, medium resonance quality, tune down to sub levels, adjust decay to desired taste, and send audio.

I've kept going back to this for sub and kick and it's become part of the setup template. It has Donk™.
It's mainly for kicks but you can use it for sub (infinite sustain, release maybe goes up to 6 seconds...)

Here is another vote for Operator. I love making kick drums with it as they get really deep and heavy.

im all set on kick drums thanx. its the layer below the kicker that i want to tweak. this guy does an ok job and demonstrating how to pull it off with operator. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NMV6sZb ... re=related at the moment i'm not the biggest fan of vsts so i was looking for alternatives, but it doesn't appear that there are too many out there.

Yeah; I've beta tested Synapse stuff for a few years and played around with it every now and then but I ended using it more and more for kicks and sub. It's got that meat'n'potatoes where it counts.
Sadly as much as I've just started messing with Operator and Analog they still sound thin to me so I just end up using my main synth (Dune).
You shouldn't have to stack synths and add effects to give a synth balls but again, I haven't given Operator and Analog enough time so I give them the benefit of the doubt.

I struggle with Live 'Analog,' You have to stuff to get if to fill up. Operator on the other hand is pretty amazing on it's own. The trick with Operator is that it's an FM synth. LOTS of options and a little tweak can make a huge difference.

I need to try this EKS demo when I get home though.
