voices in samplers volume envelope

Can someone explain the voices tab in the volume envelope of the sampler to me? I know it goes up to 32, but I'm not quite sure what that's all means. I've seen the vocing sections in synths before, I thought that ment how many waveforms the oscillator was putting out.

it means how many "voices", or sound sources can play at the same time. It's polyphony.

hold down 3 notes with 6 note polyphony, all 3 will play.
hold down 128 notes with 6 note polyphony and only 6 will play.
