Trying to do a program change in Amplitube 3 audio plugin

I am using the Softstep midi foot controller with Ableton 8.
I am using amplitube 3 as an audio plug in on one of the audio channels.
I simply want the ability to do a patch change in amplitube with the softstep.
I am able to do this if amplitube is on a midi track,
However if I put it on any audio track, which is where I need it, Amplitube will not see any incoming midi.
I need to be able to do this for live performace.
Anyone have any ideas or work arounds?

Make an empty midi channel. Route the output of the midi channel to the audio channel.
