Your favorite/recommended firewire interface for a Macbook..

Post by Faldoe » Wed Feb 15, 2012 8:42 pm

I just got a MBpro, 2.7 i7 with 8gb of ram. I need a firewire interface with good preamps - I'll be running my guitar into Live, processing audio and then running some of the outputs to my guitar amps. Low Latency of course, a modest amount of INs/Outs - I won't be doing heavy recording so I don't need a whole lot, a smaller, compact interface with the features above would be ideal instead of a larger interface with more Ins/Outs.

Also, an interface that has Impedance compensation for guitars. Thanks!

I'm looking to buy used and pay no more than $500

I've recently purchased an RME Fireface 400..(chalk n cheese compared with my original Motu 828 mk1)
Also you could look at the Fireface 800

Thoughts on the Focusrite Saphire Pro 24?

There is one for sale near me for a fair price.

If it is for guitar and all that real time stuff then only RME, the rest - Focusrite in particular won't deliver low latencies that you need.

Ya real time guitar stuff. ONLY RME can deliver low enough latency??? It does FireWire and USB, I find that odd that only those interfaces can do low latency yet offer USB compatibility; cause isn't USB slower than FireWire?

It always was RME thingy - low latency, however the USB models have (on Mac) the lowest latency of them all. If you ask on internet you will get all those answers " I have ......... card and it is fantastic" it will include rubbish under 100$ toy cards, some truly pro stuff and all between. Recently seen on this very forum someone recommending settings 512 samples as "ideal", possibly ideal but a decade ago. RME works easily @ 32 samples.

RME Fireface400 would be my vote, but way out of his price range. Ultralite is a great card too though.

Ya the fireface 400 looks awesome but more than I can spend.

Maybe I'll have to save/hope for a score.

Essential items like soundcard, mic, headphones are always worth spending bit more, wait, save....
Or get Babyface - have the low latency for guitar parts now and when you have more cash buy some ADAT gadget for more inputs.
