oh THAT loop

nice job recreating that gary - spot on

definitely what I said in the last post stands - that is a compression effect

the way you can tell is because the hi-hats come up when the kick and snare aren't triggering the compressor - the kick and snare are so loud that they swamp the compressor and the hi-hats are drowned out

but gary is right for this loop - because it is a 909 kit then you can easily do it how he recreated it - the reverb is doing the same as the room sound of a drum kit when it was recorded

Firstly, Garboozy (and others) - my sincere thanks for taking the time out to do this - I am at work, but will definitely give this a twirl tonight (I'm excited)

For Oddstep and other who question why I don't sample it - I have and use(d) it a lot in my productions.

But I really just wanted to recreate the whole setting as I want to *understand* this break and how SchoollyD created it.

A fair few decent people gave me clear ideas about this and I followed it - and got close to it IMHO.

P.S. I am new to Ableton and am learning about it-and so part of my ignorance is tool based.

I just hope that I can repay the favour to anyone who ever asks to learn how to recreate a sound - "teach a man to fish" and all that.

Regards

Forge: what you describe is what I was clunkily referring to as "airy" in my original post - the break has this roomy airy sound which gets even nastier when sped up - which is what I loved about this break in all the rave/hardcore/old skool tunes 20 years ago!

yep - but in this case it's created artificially with reverb because it's an electronic kit. Still essentially the same process - the quieter part (reverb tail) is brought up in volume because the louder attacks at the start have been squashed, and it's so heavily compressed that the hi-hats disappear when kicks/snares play

in other words, once you know that process you can pretty easily recreate it with any loop

- essentially it's mostly down to the fast release time so it stops compressing as soon as the big peak finishes.

Garboozy! On several levels I am grateful to you - your Karma credit has been topped up.

And I'll certainly pass the goodwill on - peace.

p.s. Just played your loop to some old skool producers (in Hackney where they now drink red stripe and chat about old times) - and they immediately recognised it when I played it at 154 bpm :)

Many thanks

you know, i have been following this with interest too.
but i finally got to listen to the original song, and... the _same_ exact break is in chapterhouse, 'pearl'.
the consensus there seems to be that's it's just led zeppelin's 'when the levee breaks' sped up 2x.
another possibility.. and the original had a very big reverby sound too (recorded in a castle)...

Funny that innit! Before buying Ableton and coming here, my life was simple. We samled everything I liked and did whatever I wanted with it!

Then after getting Ableton, I though "wait why not recreate things you like...Abletone affords you simple tools to do this"

Then garboozy, dylandigits et al pointed me to the source of the break (full disclosure: I thought it was "Oz Beat - The Return Of Oz Beat" where I heard it, that I thought had done it!
...I sampled it from that I think)
So, I am actually going back to (old) school here.

And yes, this break has been crucial - more than amen or even james brown...and having made acid techno, just had to slip in the odd sampled break...to wicked effect

But now, with a new project in mind, garboozy et al have really helped me to to go back to first principles.

If anyone is interested, I can upload the track where I use the break to drive the track...but only if people are interested. See, a few people seem to be keen to show their Ableton-smithing skills rather than holistically supporting the spirit of creativity through accretion! Forum monkeys!

Regards
Pete
