lets talk SSD hard drives

next upgrade on the new macbook pro is a SSD hard drive. anyone have one? is it worth 2 bucks a GB? what are the cons.(aside from price) brown box vs. retail box....my head is spinning already
ive been doing a little research, but it would be nice to hear some real user reviews.
on a side note.....i hope everyone is having a kick ass day....its sunny and beautiful here in portland oregon.

1.It's cool to boot in less than 15 seconds.

2. no more worries if you get a Sata 3 SSD, you'll never see the orange D flashing in the right corner of Live again.

I recently bought a laptop with a SSD that I boot Live from, not only does it load much quicker, I've had far less crashes. Love it.

I recently bought an 120gb sata3 ssd and IS the MOST GREAT UPGRADE that i made recently. It just do wonders in terms of speed. In Live particulary it just loads quicker, rendering faster and maybe other things that i didn't realize.
For the dudes who gigs with their laptops is even better because ssd's are known to improve a little the battery life and are more secure to vibrations, so SSD is the way to go.
Now i am waiting to get another one for a raid0 with ssd's...

If you look closer that article refers to ssd's from 2010, now we are in 2012 and SSD's have gone a long road since then.I think that guy is just a ssd hater.
In my case with an 120Gb SSD Corsair Force GT sata3 and latest firmware 1.3.3 for Sandforce i had not any single issue or BSOD for more than 2 weeks since i bought it. On Win7 x64 it is simply amaizing for everything.
And in Live I hadn't even a single crash since i installed it, knock on wood...
It is the best 200 euro's spended in my pc from a long time

ssds would be a huge plus when playing live. as far as studio goes it would be cool to have the internal and external/s be ssd, that would pwn.

maybe you should look closer, the guy is hardly a hater.

personally i would never go back to a hard drive-only system, to me SSD performance is well worth the cost.

I went around and around with this very issue for a long time. Price vs performance vs storage vs removing my optical for a second drive.

Oh, what to do?

I went with a solution that I am VERY happy with.

I bought one of the new Seagate Momentus XL 750GB hybrid SSD/drives. It's 750GB of a 7200rpm drive AND 8GB of SSD.

Why?

1) 750GB of storage in case you're going to want Omnisphere, some Orchestral libraries, Absynth, Kontakt, etc.

2) It's a speed demon. Go to storagereview.com and check their review. http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_mo ... 0gb_review It kicks serious ass over a normal hard drive AND AND AND they're coming out with a firmware update to allow the SSD to be in the loop for BOTH writing and reading

3) Price. 750GB PLUS PLUS PLUS 8G of SSD for $180 from Amazon?

4) SSD on its own has some serious downfalls... A) you're either going to settle for a small amount 128 or 256 or B) you're going to pay through the nose and/or C) you're going to have to really get into tearing out your optical drive, etc. What a pain.

SURE, an SSD would be killer. But guess what? Most of us live in the real world where price vs performance vs storage comes into play.

I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

I'm running OS on SSD, and I can't say which is significant benefit by the SSD or i7 processor. But I can say OS runs smoothly.

Mechanical hard drives fail too. The way FLASH memory works in SSD may be frightening for the misinformed, but that does not mean that SSDs are disposable drives that are more prone to failing than HDDs.

And, you should always have a good backup plan, whether using HDDs or SSDs.
