Teenage Engineering OP-1

Post by Derj » Thu Mar 15, 2012 10:58 am

Putting aside the polarising effect the Teenage Engineering op-1 seems to have. I am mighty close to deciding to get one. The portability of it is a massive plus for me as I travel a lot and its in hotel rooms with a laptop and ableton that I normally get the chance to produce. If I got the OP-1 am I able to use it like a normal audio in like a guitar to play over existing tracks or am I limited to exporting as wav and dropping the audio into ableton? Basically I want to be able to jam within existing projects using the op-1 all within ableton - is this possible?

Just before you drop 1000 dollars or whatver it is, you should know it is a synthesizer.

You play it, and record it. Audio or midi.

ctrl + left/right = select transient

ctrl + shift + left/right = select between transients

ctrl + space = play selection

Yes, of course u can jam over existing tracks and record it right in. Like a guitar (I suppose lol). the OP-1 has audio outputs. Your computer has audio inputs (probably, yeah,,, ?). Have fun 8)

The bit of information I forgot to add here was can I transfer the audio live over USB rather than having to send it out through the mini jack output as that would mean that I would have to bring an audio interface with me.

I'm curious to know the same. OP-1 looks great ( apart form £ tag ! )

I used to have a novation xio synth which does that - loved it. 2nd hand xios can be found pretty cheap. still sort of portable?

I've got a 13" macbook pro which rather frustratingly has one audio in/out port so if I'm using headphnes to listen I can't feed the op-1 in - might have to be an audio interface like the NI Audio 2 DJ but would be super handy if you can send audio live over USB.

You can NOT stream audio live over USB from the OP-1, however you can enter DISK mode and get all (tape, album etc.) files off the machine. You can then process and arrange these files in Live and export as 4 mono tracks, back to the OP-1.
