Little Radiator

Everyone needs a little warmth in their life. Little Radiator models the classic sound of the Altec 1566A mic preamp, and lets you spread some analog tube magic on your mixes. This was one of the main sounds from the classic Motown mixes, became a secret weapon of boutique producers, and is now a vital part of the sound of bands like the Black Keys. Why? Give it a listen and hear. Subtle warmth, or driving grit, all the things you need to shake the "clean" off of your computer recording. Now you're getting that warm feeling.

Radiator. Coming April 2012

This upgrade from Little Radiator is based on the Altec 1567A (the 1566A's big brother). It's the next level in this classic sound with extra control and an extra SoundToys twist. Details coming soon.
A Bit of History

The unmistakable green-faced Altec gear, and in particular the 1566A and 1567A, played a big part in shaping the early "sound" of Motown between 1961 to 1964. Songs by greats like The Four Tops, The Marvelettes and The Supremes went through a 1567A mixer to the massive three track recorder. Ahhh, when life was simple. These mic preamps and mixers have a very colored warm sound and are very loud. The EQ is as simple as it gets, with one knob for bass, and another for treble. After Motown, and after much gear came and went, analog diehards began seeking out the 1566A and 1567A as inexpensive sources for real tube sound. Producer Matt Wallace was a very big fan. Butch Vig and Billy Bush are also fans. Check out our Gear Closet on the 1567A for even more info.

 omg, just when you thought you've seen everything. A free plugin that requires iLok. And iLok is designed as extra precaution to keep people from getting software for free.

Guess they figured the iLok costs money so that's the least they could do. :P

Maybe it will go on sale though soon, and they'll pay you to try it.

What a circle jerk just to install a plugin. iLok does have an advantage if you have more than 2 machines or reformat your system a lot.

Um ok, well if you guys are done complaining about needing an ilok, i'll move on to actually talking about the plug in... ;)

This plug in sounds pretty dang good, definitely has a nice grit & vibe. Similar use to the Saturator plugin, less controls, but the basics are there — drive & mix. The mix knob is nice, so you can make it super dirty & then reintroduce your clean sound & get your transients & tone back...

I recommend grabbing it... I always like SoundToys' stuff, and this is no exception.

It's a limited offer so the only way to stop it still being distributed after it's over is to have it ilok protected. So get it while it's available soon it will be gone the lucky ones keep it for life. I don't think Soundtoys are worried about the anti piracy protection brigade being unable to get it.
If you don't have an ilok think of this as a great plugin that comes free with your ilok purchase.

So far I really like it but not sure how to use it along side Decapitator and Devil-loc If you don't have devil-loc or decapitator it's great for making tracks louder without anyone noticing you used something to make it louder that means you don't need to apply as much limiting or compression.

you just want to turn it into jerky.

A new generation of DAW users have spawned since usb-key piracy-protection had it's dominance circa 10 years ago. It's sad if this generation supports it.

It may not emulate the Altec this plug is supposed to do, but I'm confident you'll get a very similar result between using the Dynamic Tube, Saturator and Overdrive lightly.

Older iLok slaved pro-studio folk stuck in 2004 who want to emulate old gear with s/w may be into it, but I'm doubting that's what the majority of Live users are.

KvR appropriately put this in their Marketplace forum. It's a shame since it's SoundToys:/

 I guess I should've mentioned the iLok thing up front. Hope everyone finds something that suits their needs.

I'm already running an iLok, so this freebie is a no brainer. Sounds fantastic as well.
