Yeah the Russians aren't two dimensional bad guys.
One of the most fucked up thoughts history wise is to think about how if Russia hadn't essentially beaten the nazis, (The statistics flatly are in favor if this view, we mostly inflicted casualties on them from bombings, the Soviets killed twice as many German soldiers as the US and UK combined.), we would be fighting the nazis probably in South America. So the brutal and savage horror of the Ten Year Plan to industrialize the USSR turned out to be necessary in order to prevent a nazi conquest. Fucked up but definitely part of the reality of the world we live in.

Plus a war ravaged paranoid dictatorial communism with cool WWII uniforms etc. is far more interesting than psychotic extremist muslims using religion to convince people who are disgusted with our lust for oil and control in the middle east into joining them. Too old school, politics and 20th century propaganda are at least somewhat modern compared.
