Play something soft and folky like a ukelele and keep it in major.
Just play whatever the iPad commercials are playing.
Get a ginger singer that sounds like Faust.
This should put you up in the recommended section in no time!

does the licensing have to do with who your publisher is, and if so who are most of you guys using for publishing and licensing?nebulae wrote:I sell stuff on Bandcamp, mainly because it's free and easy. I set up my songs to stream on Soundcloud, and then I use the "Buy" link on Soundcloud to link directly to the Bandcamp page. Bandcamp is then linked to Paypal, which makes it easy for people to buy songs. I feel that Soundcloud is likely the best way to build a community of listeners, and Bandcamp is likely the best way to sell for free, where they make money off the purchase fees. No having to pay Tunecore on a per song/album/release basis. The disadvantage is that Bandcamp doesn't pupulate Amazon or Itunes like Tunecore does.
But I concur with the sentiment of others...online selling is likely not going to make you a ton of money, IMHO. Playing out and selling CDs is probably a better way to make money off music. Also, consider licensing your music for compilations, commercials, or movies...there's decent money in that.

Using a service like Taxi is great for connecting your music with directors and ad agencies looking for a specific piece of music. But be warned, you are basically creating music for a specific purpose. So from an artistic point of view, you're way WAY beyond sellout if you use those services, because you're basically creating music for the singular purpose of being sold. Meaning check your inner artist at the door before entering.

Thanks for clarifying on that, nebulae, it's an important disclaimer.
The upside of that is if you're already able to have it pro sounding technically, you can lay down a variety of :30 - 1:00 snippets of stuff as a starting point and not lose time on deciding artistic directions personally.
You're still doing something with making music and getting paid for it, so...it doesn't mean you can't have time to focus on your personal stuff. You can add it to your resume, get names and get your name passed around and make a little $$$, though the odds aren't low.
There's another place http://audiojungle.net/ that's in a similar vein but more for online stuff, another one to check out. I think for the most part it's more of a self-sustaining community but tou can see who and how much people are making there.
