Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
So i was watchin several videos of Skrillex performing live and i was very interested in his live setup. I know for a fact that he uses Ableton Live along with the M-audio Trigger-finger and some sort of turntable mixer. I use Ableton Live with the Novation Launchpad and i can get my hands on a mixer similar to his easily. What i was wondering was how does he use the Trigger-finger with ableton and could that be done using the launchpad? And im sort of new to DJIng with ableton, how does the DJ mode work?
Here's a good example of him using the trigger-finger live

Re: Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
Pretty sure all he does is launch tracks from the trigger finger and do minimal amounts of mixing.. You know.. intro to outro type mixes..
At least that's what he was doing when I stopped by the stage he played at last year for Shambhala..
Not exactly ground breaking or terribly skillful.. no beatmatching required because everything's warped in Live.. so hit play and let the songs mix themselves out.
If you want to be a DJ.. look at what other DJs do and how they mix.. don't try and emulate a trendy grammy winning producer who just happens to DJ because he gets booked to play around the world.. (for being a producer, not for his technical abilities and/or lack of DJ skills)

Re: Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
He is not doing anything fancier in that video than just using the knobs on the trigger finger to control effects in Live. You could do that with any controller. Mostly that was all on off on Beat Repeat and tweaking the settings on that effect alone.

Re: Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
Personally if you want to get into creative Djing i would use dedicated DJ software like Traktor or Serato. I really like using Live for production but it turned out to be a real ball ache putting together a dj set using it (with a launchpad). I finally caved in and bought a copy of Traktor and an X1 controller and got a set together in around a week, and like i say, you can do some creative mixing with them, not just the intro to outro mixing as described earlier in this thread.

one nice thing you can do with a trigger finger (which im not sure mr. skrillex is doing), is using the velocity sensitive pads with aftertouch to smash and control different effects.. one of the reasons i still love mine.
Re: Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
Before the APC40 and Launchpad came out I used to use a Trigger Finger to move around Session view and fire clips using the Mackie Control protocol. Worked great but sort of pointless if the OP already has a Launchpad.

Wait I'm confused he's actually mixing up there? I thought all along he just triggered a song waited for it to end and pressed the trigger down for the next song.
You wanna watch a skillful live Ableton set go to a Surkin show, that French dude has got it down fo sho in my eyes! Even though I prefer my 2000s any day.

Re: Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
well this post really took off haha, OP here, just to let ya know. I was sorta half asleep when i made this post, didnt specify what i was really asking. Okay, so my real questions are, if i warp my songs correctly and have them all set up, what Tempo do i set the DAW tempo to if the warp tempo's of my songs are all different? And im not trying to copy a commercial artist, he was just my best example other than Madeon when i was half asleep. With that Skrillex Better than Skrillex video, i was wondering if i could do something like this using my launchpad, sorta like the beat-repeat but manually instead of turning knobs (which is what actual skrillex does). I have considered using a set-up similar to Madeons, but im not that familiar with Ableton yet, im definetly considering that for the future. Here is my latest track if you wanna check it out http://www.soundcloud.com/theofficialstratos/complicity
Re: Skrillex Live Setup vs. My Live setup
and before you go bashing on "Skrillex's style is just waiting for one song to end and playing the next", check out his hour long BBC Radio mix at Rockness, a whole hour of music with NO breaks in between the songs, he actually does mix the songs together. Just saying. people always bash on him simply because he's mainstream, when he has alot of talent and good ideas

That's why it's called mixing.Stratos wrote:a whole hour of music with NO breaks in between the songs, he actually does mix the songs together
