running ableton live with 2 outputs

Post by wernervonw » Tue Apr 10, 2012 3:04 pm

Hey guys.
I am still fairly new to Ableton and when i search the web it seems that i am stuck with a 2 in an 2 out usb dual pre sound card when I am actually in need of a 4 out sound card

is there any way of playing live with my macbook while running ableton. i am the drummer so i want to send the track to front of house and the click(audio track) and the track(audio track) to myself. How do i do this and how can i adjust my click and track volume without changing the engineers mix. I don't want the track to loud in my ears but must be the right volume for the engineer.
how does the routing and channels work? basically i want to hear both in my headphones and send the music out to the engineer.
The usb dual pre interface has it's own headphone jack

Hope you guys can help me.

thanx

I can do this quite easily, I have a Fast Track Pro for my audio interface. This allows for multiple outs. You want the mains to go to the engineer, but the cue to go to your headphones.

You set the cue out to channels 3/4, and the mains to 1/2, and then when you "solo" a track in cue mode, it actually simply sends it to the 3/4 output. If you don't want that output to get sent to the mains, just deactivate the track, and as long as the solo/cue button is selected, then the 3/4 still gets it.

That's odd, because the internet never tells me I'm stuck with what I have. In fact, it usually tells me I need to buy bigger and more expensive gear. Except my bank account page of course.

However in this case, I think there is a no cash solution. With macs, you can go into the system sound setup and create an aggregate device to combine your sound card outs with the onboard headphone out. I've never tried it, so not sure exactly how well it works or how to set it up, but it's worth looking into.

hey guys

thanx for the replies

how can i create 3/4 with just 2 in and 2 out for instance? my input configuration by default is
1 mono + 2 mono or 1/2 stereo
same with outputs. how must i set up the tracks and does the headphone mix come directly out of my sound card?

thanx again for replies.

As was mentioned earlier, you will have to create an aggregate device with your internal sound card in order to add another 2 outs. This should give you 1 stereo out on your audio interface and 1 stereo out from your computer. Creating an aggregate device works on a Mac, search the topic to see how its done.

Another way around it is to run your set in mono. This should give you 2 mono outs on your audio interface and you won't have to worry about creating an aggregate device or have an out from your computer. This will work with Windows and Mac.

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like your audio interface provides independent channels for your standard outs and your headphone outs. You may look into another audio interface if you really need that functionality.

Thanx so much. I think the mono outputs will also work the best.
That is perfect. How do i route my channels to be able to have that. i have two audio tracks next to one another. one with audio click and the one with backtrack. want to hear them both and just plug in the right side for example to send to the engineer. how can i adjust my music and click volume without destroying the volume i am sending to him or is this not possible like you mentioned.

thank you so much guys.

Follow process similar to what was mentioned previously:
Main outs on Ch.1 mono
Cue outs on Ch. 2 mono

Have both tracks playing
Deactivate the click track (click the track's yellow box so it turns gray)
Set the volume on your audio interface so engineer gets a good signal level
Cue both tracks and set the volume for the cue via software so its good on your headphones

That should have you set.
