I finally received Live 4.0.1 today from an individual seller. I have not unlocked it yet but the person's serial has been transferred in my name already via email to Ableton support.
Ableton has asked me to use the same serial number the previous owner has registered which I'm very uncomfortable doing. The seller said he's removed the software from his computer, but how can anyone ever be certain?
The FAQ site says that the new owner (myself) will be given a NEW serial number to use with the product.
However, Ableton doesn't seem to want to do this, though I've asked if they could twice. I'm awaiting a reply email from support.
For those of you who got Live from another person and did the software transfer, were you assigned a NEW serial?
Thanks...

don't worry about it. as long as they let you authorize on your computer there is no issue.
if it ever comes up later and they won't let you authorize simply attach the emails from now where you were trying to get them to issue you your own serial.
understand though, that if they issue you a serial then your computer using the new serial could be authorized from their site as could other computers with the old serial.

I was able to unlock the software fine today and downloaded the Live 4.1.4 update which is working fine as well.
I was told, however, that because my purchase was a "2nd hand buy", even though I bought legally and everything was transferred into my name, I don't qualify for the free upgrade to Live 5 when it's released.
Such is life but I'm excited about using Live.
