Strange automation problem

I've been having this strange problem lately where I'll be tweaking some knobs on an EQ or another plugin while listening to the track and whatever value I set it at it will incrementally decrease immediately as the track plays. For example, say I roll some lows off the drums with an EQ to gain= -4. As the track plays ableton will automatically move the parameter in real time -3 -> -2 -> -1 -> 0. It kind of drives one insane. My snare level on a drum machine just kept decreasing to an inaudible snap as well and returned there no matter how many times I raised the volume on the plug in. I've looked at the automation tracks and they oddly never reflect the movement on the plug in itself. It could be a straight line for a parameter on the track and be decreasing out of nowhere. It's kind of like having ghosts in your DAW. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
