@simmerdown. Personally I've used pirated stuff in the past, but nothing I use regularly. I accept that loads of music I like from the last ten years wouldn't of happened without Piracy. I still think that yacht guy is being a dick about it for not buying it now his music is paying him, I know he gives away downloads but he is earning concert cash. Someone who isn't me reckons he can live with pirating off a company that if he pays for 2/3 of their products that he uses.

For video I use Final Cut Pro, Apple Motion, Adobe Flash, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

And I think there is something to be said for "pirates" becoming dependent on certain tools which puts them in a position to have to buy them further down the road. Like when Jona had to buy Live. Had he not pirated it, he would possibly would never have become a paying customer.
For that reason, if I were a software developer, I would want as many people as humanly possible using my software, regardless if they choose to pay for it or not. The more the merrier. More potential paying customers because a larger volume of people are using their tools and talking about them and they eventually get more popular.
Also notable is the comment by Claire Evans (the other one in YACHT), who said, "No artist can afford a $2,000 video editing program. That’s just a huge roadblock for most people." I agree with this especially for people starting out. Software developers have to understand that there will always be people who cannot afford the tools but still feel the insatiable drive to create. Good artists (and bad artists, I guess) are going to want to use the best tools they can find and if they can find the best tools for free, why wouldn't they?

I'm a double bass player. Do you know how much a good double bass goes for? A crap, laminated, student model can run you up to around $5,000. Start moving into quality carved basses and you're getting into 5- and 6-figure territory. It's even worse for violins.
The artists who have a drive to perform or create will do what has to be done to acquire the tools to learn, hone, and perform their craft. The fact that software can be stolen without the potential of an immediate physical repercussion is the *only* reason someone would justify doing it in the name of "art." Artists have been having to pay for their tools for a long time. How many people would have taken the quote seriously if it had been: "No artist can afford a $2,000 electric bass. That’s just a huge roadblock for most people."

a good guitar cost more than many DAWs and still i don't remember the kids i grew up with going out and stealing too many of them... they mostly begged with parents/relatives, where gifted one from said parent/relative... or they went out and worked to earn the cash to make the purchase in one way or another.
the problem with the "producas" we have now is they are either directly from the instant gratification generation that is up and rising and demanding everything yesterday... or they've forgotten their roots like their rotary phones.

I just checked the audio damage website... Their cheapest effect is $29, their most expensive instrument is $69. Call the owner of the company, "crazy, and mean," all you want, but the dudes prices are reasonable, and they have so many people using them, that I guess they work well, and sound great.
I just think, "the yacht guy," is out of line. So what the, "AD guy flipped out." I mean, "doesn't anybody here, ever get tired, of having to basically put all your music up on soundcloud, reverbnation, etc, etc, and for free nonetheless?" All consumers expect totally, "free, as in beer," recorded music right now. I think people should pay artists. And artists should pay, for the tools they use.

You know if everyone who pirated software did the thing you see on the software from the "crews" and actually purchased the software once they used it and made money off of it then none of this would have ever been a problem. The thing is you get people like these guys who believe that because something they want to use is expensive and they can download it, that the very fact they can makes it a great act of rebellion.
Audio Damage release NOTHING that costs more than maybe $120 tops, most of it is under $80, there really aren't any valid excuses for stealing their software even if the guy behind it is a hot head... I was sympathetic towards them a little until reading the interview.
Oddly enough back when I was starting out in audio that's what I did, I "tried" all the DAWs and hundreds of plug ins, erased all of it off of my hard drive and started purchasing the stuff that I liked as I could afford it. It's a fucking shame most people don't treat it like that.

Just to really sink home the complete ridiculousness of all this. I saw them play years ago here in Seattle, they were fun. It was obvious he was using Reason on his macbook etc. We chatted afterwards and he showed me his Tattoo of the Apple logo on his leg.
