Introduction and Plug-In advice

Post by rythmc » Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:46 pm

Hi All,

Just want to introduce myself on the forum. My name is Ryan, I've been a musician as long as I can remember and recently have crossed over into the DJ/Production world and having a blast with it! Started on Traktor and then got ableton about 6 months ago. What a program!

Anyway, I was hoping someone had some advice as far as plug ins go... I got Sylenth a couple months back and couldn't be happier, AWESOME synth. I am thinking about buying another plug-in but since they're so damn expensive I want to make sure I invest wisely. One that I'm considering is the arturia midimoog, as I love that sweet-sweet moog sound. Also maybe the Nexus 2 since I am not very happy with my 'housey piano'.

Not sure exactly what I'm looking for since I'm still pretty green in the world of production, pretty much a solid synth thats worth the $$! Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks

Analog sound: u-he diva
Lots of options, good sound: u-he zebra
Great atmospheres, pads, fx: omnisphere, alchemy
Other's I would look into: Fabfilter twin, NI Massive, NI reaktor, Dune, Image Line Harmor

I would say either of the u-he stuff mentioned above.

Since you dont have a buttload of plug-ins yet, learning one of the u-he plugs may keep you from searching and searching, spending and spending, to only do what the u-he stuff does.

They are easy to learn, not too expensive, and sound great for software.
keep in mind, Diva is a CPU hog. Zebra is much more performance friendly.

ALSO there is always Reaktor. That shit will keep you up to your neck in synths effects etc, for YEARS.

Thanks for the advice! I already have suite, but will definitely check out these options. U he sounds like a great option, and I've heard good things about reaktor.

If you're using a PC, Cakewalk Triangle is a nice VST monosynth plugin that's free for the asking.

Triangle II is out now too...free, kickazz synth

if you have suite though?..sooo much, and so many free presets for operator, simpler...all this stuff

Dude, your best bet is getting Komplete 8 or Omnisphere.I know both are kind of steep in price, but for $500 bucks your getting alot of stuff for music. With Komplete, and with Omnisphere your getting the best synth sounds.Komplete 8 includes alot of meat and potatoes type sounds with butt load of synths like FM8,Massive,Absynth,Reaktor,and Reaktor alone has 1000s of free downloadable sytnhs.Omnisphere has alot of synth sounds from tons of different synths. If your not willing to invest that much then I would get Alcamey my choice,or Zebra which is considered one of these best synths out right now..........Check out the 20 best Vst's in the World today for better info. http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/tech/ ... -262145#!2 P.S if you have the money nothing can beat Omnisphere, but don't buy Nexus over Omnisphere. You can find coupon codes for musicans friend on the net for 15% off if you look.I did this and got Omnisphere for $400 even with no tax and free shipping.Omnisphere will blow Nexus out of the freakin water, and if you pair it up with Trillian  However, for a good foundation to start off with I would get Komplete 8 off of Muscians freind first with 15% off,and build your way up to Omnisphere late down the road like I did. With Komplete 8 Ultimate,Trillian,Omnisphere, and Maschine the skys the limit

AWESOME. Thanks for the input, this is a big help. I'm considering going the komplete route... holy crap they have a lot of stuff in that package! I think that would satisfy me for years.

I live across the street from a guitar center so I think I'm gonna walk over there and just see if they have demo versions I can play around with and see what I like. Arturia's demo download is more of a pain in the ass than its worth!

No thanks on the Alcamey, I'm not sold on that one.

I gotta check out omnisphere that thing looks like a BEAST

Went to guitar center and played around with some of the softsynths... holy crap omnisphere and trillion are insane 8O. If only I could drop 470 like it was nothing.

Gotta DL the demo of all the NI products to see what I think, but from what the dude was telling me at GC they aren't going to be able to hold a candle to omnisphere. I also have sylenth, which is great, but I want to just keep expanding my arsenal... its addictive

I'm going to check out the NI stuff but im leaning towards omnisphere since I was so blown away just playing it for 10 minutes. I'm sure NIs synths are great but the impression I get is that they are more for sculpting and creating your own sounds. Definitely awesome, but for me, I like the ease of use of having a buttload of amazing sounds at your fingertips that you can then tweak to you liking.

Thoughts? I'm going to go one way or the other once I get the next GC coupon in the mail. Thanks again, the feedback has been a great help.

If you already have Ableton Live 8 Suite then I would just get Omnisphere you can make bass sounds in Omnisphere.Trillian is nice, but you can always add it later on if you need more bass. The drums in Ableton Live 8 Suite are pretty good, and they will hold their own with Omnisphere.Just be careful when you mix with Omnisphere watch your volumes.I own alot of crap, but Omnisphere is the best sounding stnth you can buy without going the hardware route.Check out musicans friend and use this coupon code I found on the net for 15% off NEWGEAR12 .It's best to buy from musicans freind because I don't pay sales tax and always get free shipping. If that coupon does not work just google new ones.I got Omnisphere for around $400 even with free shipping lol.The best thing about Omnisphere is they constanly add new patches and updates free.Omnisphere will not be replaced for atleast 3 more years,so in the meantime you will get loads of new sounds free of charge. Native Instruments Reaktor is the only synth that would compare to Omnisphere if their was ever such a thing lmfao. But if you buy Reaktor you might as well buy Komplete 8 lol.I love Komplete 8 and Omnisphere, but if I was forced to pick one I would go with Omnisphere

Thanks all, went with omnisphere. 6 disks and half a day later its installed and it is BEASTLY! Yeah, maybe I'll get komplete at some point but pretty damn happy with just omni, sylenth, suite, and some sample packs for extra drums and perc.

Time to focus on the day job... although all I can think about is playing with omni!!!
