ext. harddrive for samples/libraries. usb 2.0 sufficient?

Post by zetaborealis » Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:22 am

I want to put all my vst sample libraries (Nexus, EWQLSO etc), all my audio samples, and all my ableton projects on an external hard drive, because I do not have enough internal hard drive space.
Is a usb 2.0 connection sufficient for this? will I notice any performance drops or anything? has anybody tried this?

Cheers

Works fine for me. Windows 7, Live 8.2.7.

Sometimes up to 40 tracks, mostly audio. I freeze and flatten a lot of MIDI.

I've got a 1TB Verbatim drive and it's been hassle free for the last 2 years.

is the 1TB verbatim a usb 2.0?
I've heard from people that when using big synths and its of tracks you can run into problems, especially latency problems..
Any others doing this?

Yes it is USB 2.0

Latency in playback has never been a problem.

Latency in recording is more likely to be due to soundcard settings, although I have not experienced this.

I'm sure other forumites will have more to say on this......

I'd maybe play short samples from a usb2.0 drive..
but not projects/recordings..(only backup)

I use multiple usb drives, some for sample and stems, The only issue is when I disconnect and reconnect a drive it takes a couple of minutes at the most to initiate (read) the drive. Once done there is no issue.

I use a external S-ATA drive, my recommendation when your machine has an e-sata port.

cheers
