But then I watched a video about how you can use the big maschine as an ableton controller to launch clips and stuff! 8O

Anyway, going to keep messing with this, I have 42 more days before I have to return it.
Aside from keyboard commands/combos, all the other stuff like triggering clips and such can be done with the MPD32. It just takes more time setting it up compared to the newer generation of controllers which have those functions preset on a dedicated section of the controller, like APC's and Maschine etc.

My own example: the MPD is used almost exclusively with a couple of drumrack presets/templates I built. The first pad bank uses the pads for normal sample triggering, the second pad bank is mapped to the mute switches of the used (max 16) samples, the third pad bank has all kinds of Live functions assigned to it like Clip navigation in Session View. The first encoder section (above the transport controls) maps to macros of the drumrack, the second to panning of the samples, third to all kinds of drumrack functions. All of this can be assigned without a second program for converting midi to keyboard commands.

Very interesting. Guess I'm going to have to spend some more time mapping the this week. Besides better drum pad sensitivity having all those extra functions built direction into the Maschine is one of the reasons I was considering it, but alas it's twice as expensive (after the mpd pad upgrade.) And who knows if you can even do all that stuff with the Mikro.

Basically I want to be able to navigate to clips, start and stop clips, overdub, undo, redo then I don't have to use the keyboard for 80% of the stuff I do in Ableton. If I can do all that maybe I'll just try upgrading the pads and see how it goes. It's too bad you can't just buy the Maschine as a controller without the software. Maybe I'm missing out on the workflow aspect of Maschine but it's too bad you have to spend $600 for a controller if you just want to use Ableton with it.

Or maybe better, return the MPD32 and get a Korg padKontrol instead.
It's cheaper so you can get some other stuff and the pads get very good reviews!

Oh man, you just had to go and throw another choice of controller in there didn't you. Can't you tell I'm already having a hard of enough time making a decision with only two choices. :D

Haha, sorry about that :)
But I and someone else already posted about the padKontrol on the 1st page of this thread :)
Still, it's the cheapest of the 3 options and from what I can tell the pads get the best reviews of the 3.
