Audio clip of fix length

Post by groumpf » Mon Apr 30, 2012 3:13 pm

Hi,

sorry if already posted by searching is not always simple.

I have a MIDI synth and use the External Instrument to control it.
So I make a MIDI clip, then I would like to render it to an audio clip. I started to record but I found no way to stop it without hitting space bar.
Is it possible to say : record 4 bars ?

Thanks.

Recording it is one way to prepare it for rendering, but you can just copy the midi clip and paste it into the arrangement view, then highlight it and render.

Sure I can do that but the "workflow" is somewhat quite complex, as I have to save the result to disk (choose a folder), then import it back to an audio track.
It's hard to believe that such software like Live cannot handle it in a easier way.
I mean, why Live asks me a folder for the export function while it knows usually where to store all audio tracks ?

I'm still in 8.2.2, is there something new in 8.3 about this ?

Finally I'm wondering if the Ext Instrument is very useful with MIDI Synth as you need anyway another audio track to put the recording (as I suppose that a synth will provide different sounds and not a single track with the same sound).
In case of a single sound/track, I could freeze the whole but this is very limitative.

Update: I found that it is impossible to export an audio track which input is an audio input (my MIDI synth). The only way to record is ... to record.

So I'll use the Ext Inst. The advantage of that is the loop mode. Otherwise, recording is simpler.

But I'm facing a problem, how can I disable the MIDI output of a track ?
The only way I found is to set the MIDI output to "No output". This is not very userfriendly. The track mute doesn't work for that.

So a lot of thing to think about when recording external synths on different tracks...

Yeah I see what you're saying. I don't find it very annoying that you have to save the clip out and then re import it to an audio track.
If I were to record an external instrument, I don't think I'd do it in ableton. I'd probly record in audacity (or something better if you have money) and work with the .wav in ableton. I never really think about ableton as a program to record live instruments in. idk.

Of course the advantage in ableton is that you can manually correct mistakes..
