digital distortion

When I start recording takes into Live, things go fine for a short period of time. After about 15 minutes or so, takes start distorting upon playback. A sort of digital distortion that sounds like something straight out of 'The Matrix'. Also, if I try to record a take longer than 3 or 4 minutes in length, the distortion has been happening quite consistently. It is the entire take that is distorted, not just part of it. I then quit Live, restart it, and try again. It seems to work fine for a little while, then starts again.

I read a post that mentioned the iMic has problems as it is powered by the mac, and that may cause pops and clicks. The info, taken from the Griffin site, recommended picking up a powered USB hub. I bought Griffin's as it is supposedly designed specifically for audio recording. It is on it's way to me, but in the meantime, are there any other thoughts, ideas, opinions, similar cases out there?

This is obviously VERY frustrating when trying to record songs with my band members, getting a perfect take, only to find out it is distorted, and I have to try again.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi draff,

do you use OS 9 or Os X?
if it's oS X it's maybe related to this thread http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2689.

I you use OS 9 which driver do you use? The soundmanger or a third party ASIO driver?
I have an iMic and will test it within the next days.

I use OSX.

Also, I had read that post, but, as I'm sure you have noticed, it more or less describes the problem, and doesn't really have any concrete solutions. I have tried various suggestions [change latency settings, don't run any plugin/effects, work from the hard drive vs. an external drive, etc], and the problem persists. I'm hoping the suggestion of using a powered USB hub with my iMic helps. I also like that in the post mentioned, you guys said your looking into the problem and hope to provide some kind of solution. I love using Live, and it would be PERFECT for me if I can eliminate this problem.

Hi dirtystudios,

there's a third party company www.usb-audio.com creating an ASIO driver for a lot of USB devices (Including the iMic).

From the audio side it seems to work well with Live. But unfortunately there's also still an ugly bug by using this ASIO driver in Live.

With this driver Live is crashing (under OS 9)when you press the "Hardware Setup" button in Live's audio preferences. The workaround for that is to use another ASIOable (what a nice word :)) application, open the panel there, make the desired settings, close the app and just select the driver in Live and don't touch the "Hardware Setup" button.

I'm also getting the distortion and I'm using an M-audio delta 66 with the omni break out box. I've only had a few days, so I'm still sorting through it, but it's real drag.
