I've had this thing about 9 years and it's actually been pretty good for most of that time, but I think it's dying....dazzer wrote:410 being problematic - who'da thunk it?
FWIW Lion is fine here (and viva MOTU!).
OSX 10.7.3 not good for audio? EDIT: 10.7.4 helps somewhat

You can't install an older OS than the one that was on it when bought new, so no L > SL.
Re: OSX 10.7.3 not good for audio?
You can actually, but you need two computers and it's tricky...muthafunka wrote:You can't install an older OS than the one that was on it when bought new, so no L > SL.

so I better leave that. I don't even have enough time for making music, so there is absolutely no time for fucking around with OS changes.
Re: OSX 10.7.3 not good for audio?
haha, I know what you mean! I went back to SL from Lion and I'm happy I did. I don't like the evolution of OS X with all those i(insert any word understood by a 3 years old here) bullcrap. SL is still tolerable in that regard, but Lion is too much of a closed system for me. And Mountain Lion seems to be even worse. Mountain Lion? An animal nobody has ever heard of before and nobody gives a fuck about.pepezabala wrote:so I better leave that. You're not genuine 'mac user'. You have to spare more of your time to fking around with lovely OS.pepezabala wrote:so I better leave that. I don't even have enough time for making music, so there is absolutely no time for fucking around with OS changes.

I hate macs. I hate windows even more. But the worst thing on earth are smartphones.
Well, tablets are even worse.
Re: OSX 10.7.3 not good for audio?
Why wouldn't someone be able to 'downgrade' to Snow Leopard? Just wipe the drive using a third party utility (to also wipe the 'hidden' Recovery partition), by using a second mac with the one to be wiped in Target Disk Mode or if you have some money to spare put in a new (and perhaps better) drive. The old one can then be used as external storage or you could put it in a drive caddy and replace the optical drive if it concerns a laptop.
Re: OSX 10.7.3 not good for audio?
I have researched this and this is what I have found in the most simplistic terms
If you have a Mac from 2011 you should be able to get snow leopard on it, (not sure about the late 2011 MacBook pro refresh)
If you get a new Mac that is going to be released within the next few months that will come with the new intel chips you will probably not be able to get snow leopard on there as these new CPU and GPU's would obviously never have been optimized for snow leopard (apple will not update snow leopard to support these chips)

Re: OSX 10.7.3 not good for audio?
Just an aside, people are mixed about Lion, some are getting good results others are not. It's probably due to compatibility issues, but one thing is clear, your situation is by far the worst case scenario around. Nobody but you is experiencing such a total and complete lack of CPU power under Lion, some say they get a CPU hit from Lion for sure, but nothing like what you report.globalgoon wrote:Yeah, can't downgrade to snow lion, have to stick with winderps
So it's up to you to figure out why your system is experiencing a worse situation than others. You're reporting more or less identical CPU scores in the performance test to my 5 year old laptop. Your i5 2.4ghz should be twice as fast as my Core 2 Duo, and is under Windows 7. My initial suspicion is you're inadvertently running Live or your drivers or some other part in the equation in 64 bit mode up against Live's 32 bit app. Something seems to be amiss in your system, and you can either complain about it or figure out what's going wrong, because I don't entirely think this is a Lion issue per say as much as a quirk you need to solve.
Lol at Snow Lion, that's your problem! you're trying to install an OS that doesn't exist!
Re: OSX 10.7.3 not good for audio?
That's correct. You'll need one of the latest updates of Snow Leopard to make it work, though. This is due to the Thunderbolt implementation (implemented months after SL initial release), which will interfere with the installation of a previous version (10.6.3 for instance) because of the mismatch between hardware and software OSX is known to be picky about.cyklops wrote:If you have a Mac from 2011 you should be able to get snow leopard on it, (not sure about the late 2011 MacBook pro refresh)
I did manage to successfully install 10.6.8 on a late 2011 MBP, though using Carbon Copy Cloner instead of my Snow Leopard DVD which was outdated for the task.
You might be pretty damn right about incompatibility between SL and future MBPs.
