Perfect 8x rotary controller

Post by golemus » Sun May 06, 2012 12:21 am

Hey I would like to implement following kind of controlling scheme. 8 endless knobs, which control always the selected track:

knob 1: track volume
knob 2: eq8, highpass frequency
knob 3: eq8, peak1 gain
4 peak1 freq
5 peak1 q
6 compressor treshold
7 compressor ratio

button 1, eq8, highpass on/off
button 2, eq8, peak1 on/off
button 3, compressor on/off

I hate to control track volume with a fader and majority of controllers seem to do that, so any suggestions in which controller that kind of thing would be possible, just endless encoders that always when choosing a new track assing to the same functions in the new track.

I have APC40, although I would want something smaller. I also just bought nocturn, maybe I get rid of it because a lot of problems reported. So how about Impulse, Axiom Pro or Axiom (2nd gen) or something...?

novation nocturn! has 8 rotary endless encoders with led rings for status feedback. oh i see you already got one.
do you write a remotescript or do you want to use max for live ? i ask because midilearn alone wouldn´t do the job for a selected track.

what I find as a problem is that most of the controllers have either very low resolution or some acceleration feature. I think that APC 40 has very good knobs, probably the best I have found, but it is big and heavy and I would need something more portable in addition to it. The knobs seem to go trough all the 127 values in 270 degrees.

I just bought Novation Impulse and in 270 degrees the MIDI value goes only from 0 to 21, so the resolution is 5-6 times lower. I heard also complaints of Akai Axiom (2nd gen) about low resolution. I had Behringer BCR-2000 and it had the exactly same problem, although I think the resolution was a bit higher.

So any tips of good knobs with high resolution and no acceleration (or off-turnable acceleration)...? Nocturn seemed good but the problem is that you cannot use it without automap. How about other Akai stuff like MPK 25 or LPD 32, the knobs look like exactly same as in APC 40 (without led rings) do they act also like the same...?

livid code has 4 rows of 8 i know. with the editor you can adjust the encoder speed. you can also assign one of the buttons to act like a shift key so when pressed will either increase or decrease the speed for fine or not so fine adjustments.

The Killamix lets you alter or turn off acceleration if you want.

livid code and killamix seem promising but are way above my current budget. I am surprised that there are not really solutions in the budget range.

Btw. Axion 2nd gen encoders are rubbish too, only a bit better resolution than Impulse. I wonder if Axiom Pro is also as bad or perhaps it has better (or adjustable) resolution...?

So until now I have found only two brands of usable encoders with moderate price, Akai and Novation (Nocturn, SLmk2, ZeroMk2) and the latter can be used only with Automap, and former has them only in big and heavy controllers.

You can adjust the acceleration curve in the Automap software for the Nocturn (but I agree, it's a shitty controller, I've had two, and they've given me nothing but grief). Maybe have a look at Behringer's new line? I'm really tempted, especially for the price, they seem like a steal! The knobs may or may not be a little small, though.
