Some basics now that I've spent over a year nutting this out:

1. Launchpads being used in ableton should REALLY only be used natively, you don't need automap. The launchpad works best without it.

2. Automap probably could be used for programs other than ableton, but I've found midiKatapult to be the king of this area, using my launchpad for traktor, katapult gives you pages, sliders, 2D pads etc - look it up if that's how you're using your launchpad.

3. although automap is included with the launchpad I NEVER use it for the launchpad. It is not a good combo and automap REALLY cops a bad wrap just because of this - so many people will tell you how pox automap is, most of them launchpad users.

4. A nocturn or remote SL will make you buy automap pro - it was not until I bought my ZeRO SL MkII that I realized why automap exists... Automap is an excellent piece of software FOR CONTROLLERS and is all-but-useless on the launchpad.

So don't get to excited, unless you are going to get more than just a launchpad from Novation, then you can get excited over the many benefits of automap!

^^
you simply don't know how to use automap effectively on the launchpad.
it's excellent for mapping to live keyboard shortcuts.
and you can use it as an additional layer when you midi-map to devices

Admittedly I was pointed straight to katapult...
Have you heard of / used it? It's a tops program, free to try, cheap to buy...
I now have the SL, so any live keyboard shortcuts I just use the SL now, leaving the launchpad free for session mode/ user mode use (don't use mixer much either now!)

+1 to this. Automap has always been nothing but problems for me. Once I stopped trying to get it to play nice with live, everything instantly got better.

oh...and vsts.. although I hadn't built maps for any yet on the LP..
(use the automap on the sl25 for vsts a lot)
building maps the way you want them takes some time and effort..
but it's a one time deal if you save your mappings..
